North Korea 'aids Syria's chemical weapons manufacturing'

Man with a child are seen in hospital in the besieged town of Douma Eastern Ghouta Damascus Syria

On Wednesday, Lavrov addressed the UN Human Right Council in Geneva, Switzerland, again speaking about the humanitarian corridor.

What are the allegations against North Korea?

Sanctions failing to prevent the de facto crime family that runs North Korea from making money is particularly unsurprising if one considers the effects sanctions have had on other misbehaving regimes in the recent past.

Is North Korea just playing the US?

Experts from the United Nations have found that North Korea has been providing Syria with supplies that could be used to make chemical weapons.

Acid resistant tiles, valves and thermometers are among the items supplied by North Korea, according to a report by a panel of expert investigators who oversee compliance with United Nations sanctions on Pyongyang cited by the newspaper. The Syrian regime has denied carrying out the attack.

The 200-page report includes details of contracts between North Korean and Syrian companies, as well as details of the materials shipped.

A leaked United Nations report, compiled by a United Nations panel of experts, claims to have recorded 40 previously undisclosed shipments between North Korea and Syria. They are allegedly part of dozens of shipments over several years.

Prezzo to close 100 restaurants amid high street turmoil
Soaring business rates, National Living Wage costs and the Apprenticeship Levy are all thought to have impacted on the businesses. Around a third of Prezzo restaurants could be set to close as its parent company orders a restructuring, it has been reported. .

The report indicates major flaws in global efforts to isolate both countries, and the new evidence could dampen efforts to bring North Korea to the negotiating table following a diplomatic detente at the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

"North Korea has a sordid history of supplying rogue states like Syria with weapons of mass destruction technology for cash", Andrew C. Weber, formerly the top Pentagon official responsible for combating the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, said of the new findings.

Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, there have been suspicions that North Korea was providing equipment and expertise to maintain the chemical weapons program of Syria's president, Bashar Assad.

"Syria can not be possibly using chemical weapons because it very simply has none in its possession", Hussam Aala, Syrian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, told the forum, according to Reuters.

As mentioned by BBC news, more than 80 people were killed in a chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun in north-western Syria on the 4 of April. By Sunday, the Syrian government had violated the temporary truce by launching a fresh campaign in Eastern Ghouta, the last rebel stronghold near the capital.

Why is North Korea's involvement controversial?

The allegations show a well-established and illegal trade relationship, the report said, facilitated by shell companies and sympathetic individuals and allowing the isolated states to amass weapons and earn fortunes in violation of worldwide sanctions.

Syria and North Korea have decades-old military ties.
