Nun in property dispute with Katy Perry dies after collapsing in court

The Nun Involved In 3 Year Legal Battle With Katy Perry Has Died Aged 89

One of the two nuns who had been battling against Katy Perry in a court case regarding the sale of a convent has died whilst in court.

Sister Catherine lived in the convent in Los Feliz with another nun for four decades and, in 2015, she'd tried to sell the property to restaurant owner Dana Hollister, who meant to turn the convent into a hotel.

The hilltop eight-acre property with Roman-villa style buildings was home to the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart for more than 40 years, but they haven't lived in the convent for several years.

After the property's sale, the archdiocese intervened and called Hollister's offer a fraud claiming that the nuns did not have the authority to sell the property.

Hollister was ordered to pay Perry $5 million in punitive damages for interfering with the sale.

Just hours before Holzman's passing, the 89-year-old nun begged Perry to no longer pursue her purchase of the property. The L.A. archdiocese subsequently sued her, saying the sisters didn't have the authority to sell the convent. Perry spent more than $2 million in legal fees fighting the small group of elderly nuns, according to Curbed LA.

"We asked her to save us, to buy the property. We extend our prayers today to the Immaculate Heart of Mary community and to all her friends and loved ones", he continued. A jury saw it Katy's way. awarding her and the Archdioceses $10 mil back in December.

At the time of Holzman's death on Friday, she was in court for a post-judgment hearing on the case, TMZ reports.

Following her death, Archbishop José Gomez released a statement about Holzman, even though he did not side with her decision to sell the property three years ago. They say their convent is under the direct control of the Vatican and has never been a part of the LA Archdiocese.

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 2015, Callanan said that the nuns were against the sale because they didn't approve of the singer's image.

The nuns believed after seeing Katy Perry's "sinful" music videos, she was not an appropriate choice.
