Powerful Signs From The March For Our Lives in Washington, DC

Participants gather during the March For Our Lives Parkland event Saturday

While many people marched in support of gun control Saturday at the March for Our Lives demonstrations in Washington and across the country, there were some groups who also gathered at those same marches in support of the Second Amendment.

At the largest March For Our Lives protest in the United States on Saturday, demonstrators jammed Washington's Pennsylvania Avenue, where they listened to speeches from survivors of the Feb 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Student organizers say that while gun violence is rare in their schools, threats have risen so much since the Parkland shooting that they are no longer allowed to carry backpacks to class. Once their jobs were gone, big corporate banks took their houses. "Young people and students and teenagers know how to organize, they know how to use social media, they know how to use apps that we've never heard of. Because this - this - is not cutting it", he said, pointing at the white-domed Capitol behind the stage.

Some celebrities even brought their kids to teach them how to stand up for their rights and fight back the system in order to make America a safe place.

As a 20-year-old college student, I watched and listened with amazement and pride as students and children younger than me addressed a crowd that stretched beyond what the eye could see.

"What we've seen is that there are certain things such as having - enforcing the regulation that's now in law", Kashuv said.

"Living here in Richmond, I see firsthand what gun violence can do to our community", said Raquel Chavarin, a student leader and the first speaker of the day.

"I work extremely hard at my studies". And that this should be a gun-free world, period'. In Washington D.C. alone there were at least 200,000 protestors (though estimates vary - some put the number as high as 800,000), and this protest was joined by students and allies in every major city in all 50 states.

Authorities give more details on Iowa family's death in Mexico
"Any violent act or suicide has been discounted", the prosecutors' office in the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo said. The Sharp family, from Creston, Iowa, was vacationing in Mexico and killed by toxic gas.

President Donald Trump was in Florida for the weekend. He also pointed to Trump's efforts to ban bump stocks and his support for school-safety measures and extended background checks for gun purchases.

It was the latest display of frustration by students with the national debate on gun control.

In a statement to ABC News before the event, Clooney wrote, "Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School".

There are so very many things, so many steps to take.

Gun violence was fresh for some who watched the speakers in Washington.

At Central, more than 200 students walked out of school at 10:15 a.m. holding signs calling for an end to gun violence.

Sykes also told the story of another friend, who was shot at a gas station, went into a coma for two months, became paralyzed, and died two years later.

About 30 gun-rights supporters staged a counter-demonstration in front of Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters, standing quietly with signs such as "Armed Victims Live Longer" and "Stop Violating Civil Rights".

There was only one counter-protester visible at the Allentown rally.
