Serena Williams looks to the future after Indian Wells defeat

Venus Williams and Serena Williams move to embrace after their Indian Wells third-round fixture

The sisters were supposed to play each other in the desert in 2001.

Monday night was supposed to be all about Serena Williams. The other is rejuvenated at 37, back in the world's top 10.

Serena kept Venus waiting, big sister at the net ready for the coin toss while little sister fussed with her sports drinks and made sure the plastic bag they came in was properly disposed of. "It's just afterward I don't like it as much".

We didn't listen. Her actions during matches seemed to speak more loudly than what she was saying after them. But 36-year-old Serena was unseeded in this event.

Williams is reportedly all set to launch her own cosmetics line under the name Aneres, which is basically "Serena" spelled backwards.

Well from the very first game, the intensity on court was palpable.

Venus faced two break points in the next game, but got bailed out on Serena's consecutive forehand errors to get to deuce. Serena is famed for some of her comebacks but Venus indeed held firm.

Venus got the better of her younger sister to make it through to the fourth round with a 6-3 6-4 win in Carlifornia.

She took the first game behind a swift 118 miles per hour serve, then held serve before breaking Serena in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead.

In her first- and second-round wins in the BNP Paribas Open, she played aggressive, gritty tennis, fighting back from down 3-1 in the first set of her second-round match against Kiki Bertens before winning in a tiebreaker. She has won both her matches in straight sets.

"(Serena's) level is super high and it was very hard to close out the match, just getting one ball back", Venus said.

"I really abhor every time we play, but I do enjoy the battle when I'm out there", Serena Williams said, per Melissa Isaacson of the tournament's official site. I think that's going to be a huge story, maybe the story of the year. "She was suffering a lot", he said.

Serena is still shaking off the rust after the long layoff as she hit four aces but had her serve broken four times. "It's just that she is out of touch... give her a couple of tournaments and she will be back at her best".

"I haven't played in over a year; it's definitely not less disappointing, I wish it were, but then again, I wish it wasn't". I wish it were, but it's not. "So I just have a long way to go, and I'm looking forward the journey." .

After her 6-3 6-4 defeat, Serena sent out a warning that her scope for improvement is massive and she will be targeting an improvement at her next tournament.

Stephens, who won her first major at Flushing Meadows last fall, lost in the first rounds at the Australian Open and in Sydney before reaching the quarterfinals at Acapulco. But she will have to fight for that place against No10 Angelique Kerber, who beat defending champion, No24 Elena Vesnina, 7-5, 6-2.
