Striking Teachers Win in West Virginia

Hundreds of teachers and school personnel rally at the Capitol building on the fourth day of statewide walkouts in Charleston W.V. on Tuesday Feb. 27 2018

Wyoming County's Mullens Elementary school teachers Kara Brown, from right, Katherine Dudley and Nina Tunstalle, along with Lois Casto of Central Elementary school in St. Albans, react to news that West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice and Senate Republicans have reached a tentative deal to end a strike by giving them 5 percent raises in Charleston, W.Va., on March 6, 2018. The bill's signature by the state governor has ended the nine-day classroom walkout.

A dramatic and possibly illegal statewide job walk-off by 35,000 public school employees in West Virginia that began February 22 ended Tuesday in a victory for the educators - a raise five times higher than what the state's governor had first proposed and a promise to attempt to curb their rising health insurance premiums.

A GoFundMe started by West Virginia natives raised more than $200,000 to help teachers cover personal costs during the walkout.

Still, West Virginia teachers have shown that organized workers can still have clout in the inevitable post-Janus America if their cause is just and their resolution strong.

He said Tuesday that additional budget cuts by his staff will enable all state workers to also get 5 percent raises. "All the focus should have always been on fairness and getting the kids back in school".

Gov. Jim Justice said the deal was hammered out to give teachers the 5 percent pay raise they were asking for. It was the first teachers' strike in West Virginia since 1990.

Dale Lee, president of the West Virginia Education Association, issued a statement Tuesday evening saying local leaders of the organization had been consulted and they agreed "the work action is over and our schools will reopen tomorrow". The House of Delegates later approved a 5 percent increase, negotiated last week between Justice and the unions.

A conference committee of six House and Senate members met for the second time Monday evening, where Senate Majority Leader Ryan Ferns said his chamber's leadership was offering "a compromise position".

A huge crowd of teachers packing the Capitol jumped up and down, chanted "We love our kids!" and singing John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads".

In a news conference, the Governor said he found room in the budget for a five percent raise for teachers, and that he would form a task force to find a fix for PEIA.

Dave Mistich of West Virginia Public Broadcasting reports the senators had been skeptical of the salary hikes "after Justice's office announced last week that he had increased revenue estimates for the upcoming fiscal year by $58 million".

Then we'll explore the history of protest art in the United States. "It shows (students) how democracy is supposed to work, that you don't just bow down and lay down for anybody".

Few states can boast teacher salaries lower than West Virginia. "They got the best lesson that they could ever have even though they were out of school". "Today we are making an investment, we are making an investment in education".

Missed school days will be made up, either at the end of the school year or by shortening spring break, depending on decisions by individual counties.
