Toys 'R' Us said to prepare for shutdown of United States operations

Media reports say that Toys R Us could close all 880 of its USA stores after failing to find a buyer or reach an agreement with its creditors.

The toy chain entered bankruptcy in September 2017 with plans to close some stores and emerge with a new business model.

"No toy company will be spared entirely in the seemingly likely liquidation of Toys "R" Us", she said.

But it had an additional burden that stacked the deck against it - close to $5 billion in debt resulting from a leveraged buyout in 2005.

That became apparent on Monday when the stocks of two of the world's biggest toy makers tumbled in US trading.

Many of Toys R Us's small stores have proved relatively resilient in recent years and the company's online performance has been robust too.

The company would only need a few weeks to heavily advertise the sales before kicking them off, she said.

Toys "R" Us may be planning a sad end to its toy story: the liquidation of its bankrupt USA operations.

Toys "R" Us in the United Kingdom went into administration in February, after talks to sell the business withered.

Sources say the company could file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation as early as next week.

The toy chain, which has a branch at Ocean Retail Park, in Copnor, Portsmouth, had appointed Moorfields Advisory to oversee administration last month after the firm failed to find a last-minute rescuer. "You know it's a different vibe when you go inside of the store", says a father as he walked out with toys for his kids.

Mattel Inc., which makes toys including Barbie and Hot Wheels, saw its stock fall as much as 6.1 per cent.

In January, Toys "R" Us revealed that it meant to close 184 locations.
