Trump dismisses David Shulkin as veterans' affairs secretary

"He's honorable and cares a great deal about veterans", Shulkin said of Jackson.

His profile rose after he conducted a sweeping press conference about the president's medical exam in January in which he impressed Trump with his camera-ready demeanor and deft navigation of reporters' questions as he delivered a rosy depiction of the president's health, according to a person familiar with the president's thinking but not authorized to discuss private conversations. But Trump has formed a close bond with his doctor in the hours they've spent together at the White House and traveling on Air Force One.

He listed what he said were accomplishments during his time as VA secretary.

Shulkin's departure caps a dizzying month of changes to the Trump cabinet, most notably the sacking of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state on March 13.

From a health IT perspective, Shulkin's most noteworthy moment was when VA announced last June that it will replace its aging EHR (electronic health record) system, called VistA, by adopting the same platform as the U.S. Department of Defense, a Cerner EHR system.

After releasing the results from Trump's physical, Jackson said "he has incredible genes and that's the way God made him". These individuals, who seek to privatize veteran health care as an alternative to government-run V.A. care, unfortunately fail to engage in realistic plans regarding who will care for the more than 9 million veterans who rely on the department for life-sustaining care.

Odell Beckham Jr. Won't Get On Field Without Contract Extension
Off-field concerns are also in play, but the ankle injury that ended Beckham's 2017 four games in is not in line to be a concern. The dynamic wideout is entering the final season of his rookie deal and is set to be paid $8.5 million in 2018.

Pentagon official Robert Wilkie would serve as interim department chief until Jackson receives Congressional approval, the president added.

The 58-year-old Shulkin had served as undersecretary of veterans affairs for health under Obama.

Jackson, a Naval officer, served as a White House physician during the George W. Bush administration in 2006. He shaped caregiver expansion plans and led efforts to streamline VA community care options.

A number of other current and former Trump administration officials have also been caught up in ethics scandals including former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, and Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

On Capitol Hill, Jackson's selection was praised by Sen. That is because I am convinced that privatization is a political issue aimed at rewarding select people and companies with profits, even if it undermines care for veterans. The Koch brothers want that, Sanders said, but every major vet group opposes it. "Our job is to strengthen the VA, in order to provide high-quality care to our veterans, not dismember it".

"I've made the decision to reimburse the Treasury, to follow the IG recommendations and I'm committed to doing what we have to do to focus on veterans and make this better", he said. "I am in the process of reaching out to Dr. Jackson and I look forward to building a strong relationship with him also".
