US Close Consulate in Mexico Citing a 'Security Threat'

The above video grab shows the moment the ferry exploded as passengers were disembarking

Playa del Carmen is considered a security threat to USA citizens, with US officials issuing a travel alert after undetonated explosive devices were found on a ferry that operates between the Mexican resort town and Cozumel a week after a ferry explosion in late February. All government employees have been prohibited from traveling to the town.

In August 2017, the U.S. State Department issued a warning to tourists about cartel violence in the once calm beach resorts of Cancun, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen.

In an email to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert quoted the notice on the website and added, "We urge all travelers to review our information on travel.state.gov before they travel".

The regional head of in Quintana Roo-the state Playa del Carmen is part of-played down the security risks, issuing a statement that stressed local officials do not know why the USA has barred staffers from coming and underlined that the area is still well attended by tourists.

There were 25 people injured in the explosion, the director of Civil Protection for Playa del Carmen told ABC News. "We do not know the reasons for the decision of the United States Government to issue this statement".

The Canadian notice, which comes as many are preparing for spring break vacations, warns travellers "to exercise a high degree of caution in Playa del Carmen" and avoid taking tourist ferries.

And last week, undetonated explosive devices were found on another boat owned by the same ferry company.

Shortly afterward, the U.S. Embassy said its employees were banned from using all tourist ferries on that route until further notice.

"We do not know the reason for the decision of the USA government to issue this statement", the office said, adding that it is ready to cooperate with the U.S.to ensure the safety of USA tourists.

"According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016", the warning for Quintana Roo states. "Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred".
