Vivo intros APEX FullView concept Android phone

This phone of the future has a pop up selfie camera and half-screen fingerprint scanner

While this was already impressive, Vivo's ambitions don't stop here.

Vivo has taken the covers off a stunning concept smartphone at MWC that it calls the APEX FullView with an incredible 98 percent screen-to-body ratio. The new handset dubbed Apex FullView sports three new technologies with the bezels being almost non-existent.

Vivo isn't saying whether the scanner is provided by Synaptics, as was the case with the X20 Plus UD.

Nevertheless, hands-on videos of the Apex seem to have a generally positive reaction to Vivo's implementation.

China-based smartphone maker Vivo has unveiled a new concept phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that sheds light on what the not-so-distant future smartphone could offer. While Vivo does put that front and center, nearly literally, too, the phone will perhaps be most interesting for having nearly no bezels at all, neither at the sides nor especially top and bottom. The bottom bezel will be very thin at just 4.3mm.

APEX FullView also claims to have the world's highest screen-to-body ratio. The display used on the device is an OLED panel and the microchips are mounted directly to the flexible circuit board enables the APEX staggering screen to body ratio. But it is a promise that an all-screen phone is in the making.

Back at CES 2017, Vivo became the first Android brand manufacturer to introduce the concept of an in-display fingerprint scanner.

It doesn't quite take up half of the display though, instead the scanner covers a reasonable portion of the bottom half of the screen. The Screen SoundCasting Technology sends vibrations through the display without the need for a traditional loudspeaker. Which is to say, that you can place your finger anywhere on the broad, sensitive area to unlock the phone.

Traditionally smartphones sported the fingerprint sensor at the bottom bezel of phones. For now, the device is just a concept, which means there's no pricing or availability. Fascinating, isn't it? With this technology Vivo makes the front screen of the phone vibrate, which then reproduces the sound like a earpiece does. In comparison to regular audio methods, this consumes less power and reduces sound leakage. The phone uses OLED display, which might use the similar fingerprint scanner unit from Synaptic. The Vivo Apex concept also has an embedded fingerprint sensor but slightly different. This frees up more space in the smartphone's interior which can allow for increased battery size as well as cooling, thus opening the potential for even more design improvements in future smartphones. Coming to the front camera, the Vivo APEX smartphone sports an 8MP selfie camera. Flip over the front-facing camera and in 0.8 seconds an 8-megapixel lens rises up from the phone's top edge.
