Volkswagen's ID Vizzion concept is a self-driving, electric dream auto

VW ID Vizzion is what a car will look like in 2030 – with facial scanning, holographic screens and 400 miles of electric

It's meant to demonstrate, he continued, that even in a future of self-driving electric vehicles, customers will be able to buy "desirable, expressive and individual automobiles-not just uniform tin boxes".

That last comment clearly seems addressed at some of the concepts competitors have been rolling out in recent months, such as the toaster-shaped Toyota Palette that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

The I.D. Vizzion concept is meant to show what will likely be possible in a vehicle by the year 2030.

Long heavily dependent upon diesel technology, VW has done a sharp about-face since acknowledging it rigged several diesel engines to illegally pass emissions tests several years ago. An electric microbus, dubbed ID Buzz, may figure into that mix.

VW has lifted the veils off its I.D. Additionally, there will be a fleet of front, rear and side cameras. Indeed, because the batteries and key electric drivetrain components are mounted under the load floor, the Vizzion offers even more cabin space than its exterior would suggest. Future vehicles will also be connected to each other, and that data can be used as well. So, the essential focus is autonomous driving, which is why the designers had to work a lot on the cabin.

Theresa May tells Trump she has 'deep concern' about tariffs plan
French President Emmanuel Macro has blasted the move as "economic nationalism" - adding it was a war in which all sides lose. By taking on Mr Trump's remarks directly, Mr Azevedo is signalling a tougher stance toward the United States leader.

This awesome piece of automotive technology, called the I.D. Vizzion, features artificial intelligence and is capable of learning. Its 111-kWh battery pack should provide a range of around 300 miles.

The vehicle features a 111 kWh lithium-ion battery and a two-motor, all-wheel-drive system that packs 302 horsepower and has a range of 413 miles per charge under the European testing system (which can produce inflated results).

VW promises that both inductive (wireless) and conventional wired charging will be available on the Vizzion through a Combined Charging System, though no charging times have been revealed. A 75kW motor would power the front wheels, whereas a 150 kW motor would power the rear wheels, offering 300 horsepower to the auto. It has been positioned as a luxury vehicle and thus mimics the Areton in terms of design, but it has the minimalist face seen in the other I.D models.

Previewing the fourth in what officials at its Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany have confirmed to Autocar will be a series of five new I.D. production models already granted a green light by its chairman Mathias Mueller, the four-wheel drive I.D. Vizzion has been conceived to sit at the very top of the German vehicle maker's line-up, featuring limousine-like exterior dimensions, a plush leather-lined interior and, in a pointer to the technical details of the upcoming showroom version of the new auto, a combined 302bhp and an electric range of 413 miles (664 kms).

VW says a production model inspired by the I.D.
