Vrvana’s Totem headset

Apple has for some time been anticipated to deal with a couple of augmented reality glasses, however a report today recommends that they're hoping to contend with Google, Microsoft and Facebook in the virtual reality space too.

A patent relating to VR headsets that Apple has made prior (not an image of Project T288).

The report further mentions the project that is internally referred to as "T288" and was hinted in some of the reports back in 2017. For reference, the HTC Vive Pro VR headset features a 1400 x 1600 resolution per display and the Galaxy S9 boasts a 1440 x 2960.

Apple has been rumoured to be working on an AR headset for a while, but a new report from CNET claims that the company has much bigger plans.

CEO Tim Cook addresses at Apple's Chicago Event. Of course, plans change and it could get cancelled altogether if Apple executives decide the finished device doesn't meet expectations. WiGig 2.0, or 802.11ay, is expected to be finalized by 2019, so a 2020 release date fits for the headset.

The report also suggests timeline when Apple's dedicated AR/VR device will be releasing and it says that it is slated for release in 2020. Augmented Reality lets you explore the real world very well and this is how you can simply explore the best of AR environment.

Just yesterday we highlighted a new patent from Apple for eye-tracking in a VR/AR headset - the latest in a long string of breadcrumbs from the company indicating spatial computing continues to be an area of extreme interest. The small box would be short-range and high-speed. This box is said to run on a custom Apple processor more advanced than current chipsets thanks to a 5nm SoC. This processor would work as a brain of the headset and the headset would be controlled by the built-in processor itself. The headset will purportedly use an 8K display for each eye and will not be tethered to a computer or smartphone.
