Russian Federation has warned the West against attacking its Syrian ally President Bashar al-Assad, who is also supported by Iran, and says there is no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma, a town near Damascus which had been rebel-held until this month. The sites reportedly include "two Syrian airfields, a research center and a chemical weapons facility".
Secretary of Defense James Mattis echoed the President when he told lawmakers Thursday, "We have not yet made any decision to launch military attacks into Syria".
The U.S. stance on striking Syria is no clearer, even after President Trump tweeted that missiles "will be coming". "We are continuing to assess intelligence and are engaged in conversations with our partners and allies".
The prospect of a confrontation between Russian Federation, the Syrian government's ally, and the West have been running high since Trump said on Wednesday that missiles "will be coming" in response to the attack in the Syrian town of Douma on April 7.
"In the past, Trump has condemned others for forecasting military plans, repeatedly blistering President Barack Obama during the 2016 campaign".
Asked if France is planning to participate in retaliatory attacks on Syria, he was noncommittal. The White House said he would consult further with allies.
Japan will only support U.S. President Donald Trump's "resolve" to prevent any further use of chemical weapons in Syria, the sources said.
Trump is considering his military options in Syria after Saturday's alleged chemical attack against the rebel-held town of Douma. There is no reason for this, he wrote, adding that "Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together".

President Donald Trump on Thursday softened his rhetoric about potential airstrikes on Syria, a day after warning Russian Federation that missiles "will be coming, nice and new and 'smart'".
His French counterpart Emmanuel Macron said he was in daily contact with Trump, stating France has evidence that Assad's regime was behind the attack.
"There has been no decision to take military action at this point".
Britain's government weighed the possibility of military action against Syria on Thursday, agreeing the "need to take action" despite polls showing the public remains wary of military intervention.
Mattis said he personally believes Syria is guilty of an "inexcusable" use of chemical weapons, while noting that the worldwide fact-finding team would likely fall short of determining who was responsible. The Syrian government has denied the allegations. France is already involved in the US -led coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
A UN-led panel has determined that Assad's forces had used sarin in the town of Khan Sheikhun last yaer and chlorine in at least three attacks on villages in 2014 and 2015.
