Budget Airline Allegiant Calls Out Critical '60 Minutes' Report

60 Minutes Preview: Is Allegiant Airlines Safe to Fly?

The CBS report updated reporting by the Tampa Bay Times, which said in 2015 that Allegiant planes were four more times than those of other US airlines to make an unplanned landing because of mechanical problems.

The program looked at months' worth of service difficulty reports-self-reported records of mechanical problems experienced by the airline's fleet-and claims it found records of more than 100 serious mechanical issues between January 2016 and October 2017, including aborted takeoffs and emergency landings.

The Charleston International Airport directed requests for comments directly to the airline. Interestingly, none of the concerns allegedly expressed by Allegiant team members during the 60 Minutes episode were found to have been reported through any of these appropriate channels. The five, who were interviewed on camera, detailed experiences ranging from disappointment to anger to trauma.

Matt Jones fumbled with his cellphone, trying to call his wife to say goodbye, as crew members on Allegiant Flight 822 ordered him to tuck into crash position over Baltimore.

Allegiant Air is fighting to reassure travelers and protect its reputation after renewed questions about safety at the low-priced carrier. "And I was wondering, oh no, tomorrow, I got to fly this airline, and it was like scary", said Melissa Termin of Mahaffey.

The airline's vice president of operations responded to the report in a letter to customers and said it was misleading and prompted by a disgruntled former employee, according to Business Insider.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant was founded in 1997 and operates 85 aircraft and 350 routes in the United States, according to the company's website.

Six of them were hospitalized and, of that group, one developed kidney failure from a condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome . Health officials are investigating a Panera Bread in Phillipsburg, New Jersey after a cluster of E. coli illnesses were reported.

Allegiant is known for low-priced, no-frill flights. In 2015, in the middle of a contract dispute, Allegiant pilots cited worries about safety, much of them centering on the aging fleet of MD-80 jets the airline operates.

The airline has offered flights from Owensboro to Orlando-Sanford, Florida, since mid-February 2009.

"I know that Allegiant has improved their safety issues over the years and are continuing to improve", he said.

In fact, Lowe, a certified travel counselor, helped a client book a flight Monday on Allegiant to Florida next fall.

For years, USA -based Allegiant Air has been luring British Columbians south of the border with rock-bottom fares on flights between Bellingham, Wash. and destinations such as Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Allegiant Air told News4Jax it is doing away with aging planes, which Delta and American Airlines use, as well. Its stock took a nosedive Monday, prompting a company official to shoot back.

Since the 1990s, the FAA has stressed voluntary reporting of potential safety issues before taking punitive enforcement actions. He explained since those incidents, Allegiant has made improvements.
