CDC warns public of E.coli outbreak in romaine lettuce

Bacterial colonies

Health officials have identified romaine lettuce out of Arizona as the culprit in an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 35 people in eleven states, including seven in New Jersey in the last few weeks. Six of them were hospitalized and, of that group, one developed kidney failure from a condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

CT 2, Idaho 8, IL 1, MI 1, Missouri 1, New Jersey 7, NY 2, OH 2, Pennsylvania 9, Virginia 1 and Washington 1.

Nine people were infected in Pennsylvania, more than any other state.

In a joint statement, the Produce Marketing Association, Arizona Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, United Fresh and Western Growers said they were cooperating fully with government and working closely to further identify the specific source of this outbreak.

This investigation is ongoing, and CDC will provide updates when more information is available.

Blizzard and High Wind Warnings remain for eastern Colorado
The rain then began changing over to snow in Northwest Kansas, and a few flurries could fall across the Southwest. Areas northwest of Sioux City could get pummeled much harder, as Yankton, South Dakota, might see a foot of snow.

Those affected range in age from 12 to 84 and 64 percent of the patients are women. Our E. coli lawyers have litigated E. coli and HUS cases stemming from outbreaks traced to ground beef, raw milk, lettuce, spinach, sprouts, and other food products. In Idaho, eight people have gotten sick with E. coli. Restaurants and retailers are not now advised to avoid serving or selling any particular food. People who develop symptoms should seek medical care and contact their local health department to report the illness. The restaurants reported they used bagged chopped lettuce.

Attorney Brendan Flaherty said, "Before you buy any chopped romaine lettuce, whether it's from a grocery store or in a restaurant, ask if the lettuce came from Yuma, Arizona".

Health officials are investigating a Panera Bread in Phillipsburg, New Jersey after a cluster of E. coli illnesses were reported.

People are advised to contact their health care provider if they have diarrhea that lasts for more than three days or is accompanied by high fever, blood in the stool, or so much vomiting that they can not keep liquids down and they pass very little urine.
