Facebook admits tracking users and non-users off-site

Mr Zuckerberg said he is willing to fix the problems in Facebook even if that requires a substantial investment. Aaron P. Bernstein Reuters

"We did this because the website may have misused some of your Facebook information by sharing it with a company called Cambridge Analytica".

The Facebook blogpost comes as the company faces a class action lawsuit in California over its decision to launch a facial recognition feature for US users in 2011.

On Monday, US district judge James Donato ruled the suit could go ahead, representing all IL users "for whom Facebook created and stored a face template after 7 June 2011". The Facebook services that third-party apps and websites make use of include social plugins such as Like and Share buttons, Facebook Login options, Facebook Analytics and Facebook ads and measurement tools.

Baser explains in-depth how Facebook "tracks" users across the web and inside apps - including by the use of "hidden" Facebook Pixels embedded in websites in a post here.

In the recent Senate hearings with the House Energy and Commerce Committee in Washington DC, Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg stated several times that Facebook does not sell users' data to third parties.

"We hope this update, similar to the ones we've been making recently, will help people navigate Facebook more easily so they can continue to connect with the people, Pages and Groups they log on to see". He didn't mention whether those other apps including Facebook's own Messenger, as well as Instagram and WhatsApp, which are also both owned by Facebook.

The CEO also seemed ignorant of the term "shadow profiles", a commonly used term in technology that refers to data that Facebook collects about people who do not have Facebook profiles. Rep.

Pegimane will not harvest its users' data and private information. Access to public user preferences, likes, news feeds and shares-with given permission-are all swiftly monetized. Even at their personal home or during personal travel, paying those expenses is often seen as a precautionary measure that outweighs the costs for the safety of such a key figure, said Jim Barrall, a senior fellow at UCLA's School of Law and former head of the executive compensation practice at Latham & Watkins.

The blog post also reviews the types of controls people with Facebook accounts have over their data. It allows them to respond quickly to repeat requests by users.

Privacy concerns have swamped Facebook since it acknowledged last month that information about millions of users wrongly ended up in the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, a firm that has counted US President Donald Trump's 2016 electoral campaign among its clients.

Over the last couple of weeks, Facebook has been trying to fix its image and has been doing this by offering a number of explanations on how it collects and uses data. It also stores some data on non-Facebook users too.

Facebook has not always provided as much information as it does now.

David Baser, Product Management Director said, 'When you visit a site or app that uses our services, we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account.
