Facebook revenue and user numbers increase despite data scandal

Facebook impervious to scandal as Q1 results of $12 billion easily beat expectations

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was also questioned by lawmakers earlier this month about the company's data-privacy practices.

Collins said Schroepfer had failed to provide full answers on almost 40 points. These campaigns will be labelled as political and display who paid for them.

Earlier this month, Zuckerberg apologized to US senators for issues that have beset Facebook, including shortcomings with data protection.

"But these are things that Facebook knows about us, isn't it?" pressed Mr Collins.

Facebook will label all political ads in the United Kingdom as "political" in an effort to become more transparent about how politicians use its platform to target voters.

If the Facebook CEO does speak, he would do so in a joint session of parliamentary committees because the Parliament's plenary sessions are reserved for heads of state or worldwide leaders "and not for business leaders", the spokesperson said.

Schroepfer said that while he was giving evidence, "we'll likely be blocking hundreds of thousands of attempts by people from around the world trying to create accounts with automated systems". In 2017 the revenue reached 85 percent.

He said the company's behaviour was not meant to be interpreted as an attempt to stop the story becoming public, despite letters having been sent to The Guardian in March threatening to sue. Schroepfer struggled to explain, saying: "A lot of this has come to light in sharp relief for us in the last month". "We were slow to spot that", Schroepfer said, adding, "I'm way more disappointed in this than you are".

Dallas police searching for person of interest connected to officer shooting
The man had a handgun and shot two responding officers and a store loss-prevention officer, the Dallas Morning News reported. A large police presence was seen outside the store and one person was seen being loaded into an ambulance.

He said Facebook would do more to "make sure those tools are used for good".

And in spite of the #DeleteFacebook movement that ironically spouted up on Twitter following Facebook's questionable handling of user data, the social network saw a 13 per cent rise in daily active users.

"You aren't an innocent party wronged by the likes of Cambridge Analytica".

Cambridge Analytica said, in a tweet, that this was "hardly surprising: Cambridge Analytica didn't work on the referendum". Parliament officials were working to to make accommodations, the report said.

Cambridge Analytica has said it was not involved in AIQ's work for Vote Leave, while AIQ has said it never entered into a contract with Cambridge Analytica and has never been part of the firm.

The firm's chief technology officer, Mike Schroepfer, will be questioned on Facebook's policies on the privacy and protection of users' data and its relationship with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. Much of Facebook's ramp-up in spending is for safety and security, he said.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a Fortune request for comment on Schroepfer's comments. It's also made a similar commitment in the US.

Labour MP Paul Farrelly said Facebook's actions had reminded him of a book written by Rolling Stone political writer Matt Taibbi about how the investment bank Goldman Sachs operated like a "vampire squid" ahead of the financial crisis.
