Ford Saying Goodbye To All Sedans In North America

General Motors Q1 Earnings, Sales Drop But Top Estimates

In its statement, Ford said it will rely exclusively on a two-car lineup, the new Focus Active-a raised, body-cladded version of its all-new Focus hatchback (a crossover, in other words)-and the Mustang.

The company has found another $11.5 billion in cost cuts and efficiencies, bringing the total to $25.5 billion expected by 2022, Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told reporters.

Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it will stop investing in sedans in North America, bowing to USA drivers' seemingly never-ending zest for crossovers and pickup trucks.

Ford "will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America", including the midsize Fusion and full-size Taurus, the company said. Which means outside of trucks, utility and commercial vehicles (which Ford reckons will take up 90 per cent of Ford's North American portfolio by 2020), there'll be just two actual cars in Ford USA's range. Expect more crossovers and SUVs, then, or cars that Ford describes as combining "the best attributes of cars and utilities", as the brand switches focus. Ford is losing money while tying up precious capacity at plants across North America to build cars that fewer and fewer customers want.

Ford's profit margin should "bottom out" this year, Hackett said on the call.

Ford President and CEO Jim Hackett cited the declining popularity of the car-which the company pioneered more than a century ago-as the reason for the decision.

The Mustang will be the only model which will be spared from Ford's slashing of its passenger-car lineup in North America. In the first two months of this year, trucks and SUVs accounted for 78.6% of the company's total United States sales volume.

Europe was the only other region where Ford was profitable - a $149-million pretax profit.

Ford to let go a massive number of products including C-Max, Focus, and Fiesta, as it is focusing on the higher benefits that accompany hybrids, SUVs, and trucks.

In addition, the company is following a larger trend by offering every new vehicle, Ford or Lincoln, during the next two years with either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid engine option.

Ford's net income rose slightly in the first quarter due largely to a lower income tax rate.

So what Ford vehicles are being dropped?

Ford is about to make some major changes to its lineup of vehicles in the U.S.
