Incel - the movement linked to Toronto suspect

Involuntary Celibates

The 25-year-old suspect, Alek Minassian, plowing a rented van into pedestrians on a crowded Toronto sidewalk on Monday, killed 10 people, injuring 15 others in Canada's deadliest mass killings in decades, Xinhua reported.

The incident and post have trained attention on an online world of sexual loneliness, rage and misogyny.

"The Incel Rebellion has already begun!" And who are those behind it?

The Facebook post, which authorities who spoke with NBC News believe came from Minassian, links Minassian to an online community known as "incels", short for involuntary celibates. However, a small contingent argue that an "Incel Rebellion" is a reasonable response to being spurned by women.

One post, which Facebook confirmed had been posted from his account shortly before the account was shut down, praised "Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger", who killed six people in Santa Barbara, California, in 2014. "I won't get notoriety for anything else so I may as well kill other people and kill myself, '" Taylor said of the men who consider themselves "incel".

Incel groups have said "there will always be more rampages because of the way society treats us" and have been celebrating the deaths of Minassian's female victims. "It's not. It's ugly".

Yet some incel sites insist they don't condone violence or misogyny.

Just as the school massacrists are inevitably revealed as obsessed with the Columbine killers, Rodger is the Ur-martyr for the highly specific type of male pathology we have apparently witnessed in Toronto.

Forums are laced with suggestions from users that at least some of the discussions are merely satire or a way of blowing off steam. "R/incels...[has] different undertones. Behind their posts is a lot of rage towards the women in their lives".

The incel community that Mr. Minassian paid homage to, for example, was banned from Reddit previous year because, among other issues, some adherents advocated rape as a means to end their celibacy.

Quickly, members of the community moved over to r/braincels, which called itself a "fun, energizing, and thought-provoking atmosphere for incel culture". The Braincels language is more toned down than that of its predecessor, but the tone is similar.

ASA pledge support to Semenya in wake of IAAF rule
The new DSDs rule also replaces the IAAF's previous regulations governing eligibility of females with hyperandrogenism . He added: "The revised rules are not about cheating, no athlete with a DSD has cheated".

"Canadians don't know who they are, but they know who they are not — they're not Americans", said Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto.

The forum promotes "blackpills", which are generally memes: images that are created to be shared with others which explain, promote or rationalise the mindset of its users.

Many "blackpills" will refer to women being selfish, cruel, shallow or all three.

The post might read as cryptic to some people, but if you've spent any time in the sewers of the online men's rights movement and its various offshoots then you'll be well familiar with the term "incel". To an Incel, sex is a basic human right for all men.

"It was a shock to discover that there was someone whose particular reason for violence was that they were lonely and celibate", she added. "Chads" are the men to whom Stacys are attracted.

Both of the genders are set up by incels as unattainable ideals.

In the group's lingo, "Chads" are sexually satisfied men - "charismatic, tall, good-looking, confident, muscular" - according to the incels site. "They feel wronged by women as a whole". Most of it is the typical incel red pill mentality: that women were committing "an injustice, a crime" against him by not offering up sex.

Bailey Poland, the author of a 2016 book about online misogyny, says the talk of brutality is risky, whatever the posters' intentions. Whether intended or not, the ensuing conversation often becomes about what women could have done to prevent men from snapping when it should be about how we can solve the problem of a men who see women as vaginal portals through which their masculinity can be fully realised.

Of course, Rodger wasn't the first killer with a misogynistic mindset.

The anti-women sentiment also recalled Canada's 1989 massacre at the Ecole Polytechnique, an engineering college in Montreal, when 25-year-old Marc Lepine entered a classroom, separated the men from the women, told the men to leave and opened fire, killing 14 women before killing himself.
