Japan orders inspections of Boeing 737 engines

US and European airline regulators on Friday ordered emergency inspections within 20 days of almost 700 aircraft engines similar to the one involved in a fatal Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) engine blowout earlier this week, citing risks of a similar mishap.

The order expands a previous European directive, issued in response to the 2016 incident, and was issued in coordination with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, making mandatory a fresh recommendation from engine maker CFM International.

It also advised airlines to inspect all other fan blades when they reach 20,000 cycles, and that it should be repeated at every 3,000 cycles.

A Southwest Airlines plane flying from NY to Dallas had to make an emergency landing Tuesday morning in Philadelphia after one of its engines was damaged, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA estimated the review will involve 352 engines in the United States, and 681 engines worldwide.

Indonesian tribe of 'fish people' evolve giant spleens for deep diving
But while the Bajau people's talents have always been known, it was unclear whether the skill was the result of practice. Members of the Bajau can dive up to 70m with nothing more than a set of weights and a pair of wooden goggles.

Shrapnel from the engine smashed the window, which caused rapid decompression in the cabin.

CFM is jointly owned by General Electric and France's Safran.

There were calls for inspections of the engines at the time, but regulators did not publish a directive.

Jennifer Riordan, a 43-year-old mother-of-two, was partially sucked through the window next to her on a Boeing 737 after it shattered when a engine fan blade broke loose and caused an explosion at 30,000 feet.

The flight made an emergency diversion to Philadelphia International Airport on Tuesday after the crew reported issues with one engine which resulted in damage to the fuselage, the company said.
