Mega Millions Jackpot victor announced

Winner Of $533 Million Mega Millions Jackpot To Claim Prize

The victor of the $533 million Mega Millions jackpot officially came forward.

Richard Wahl says he bought an easy pick ticket for the $533 million jackpot in last month's drawing at a gas station.

The payout is the largest single lottery win claimed in the state and the fourth-largest payout in Mega Millions history. He checked the numbers around midnight and initially thought he had won only $1 million until he realized he had the Mega Ball along with the other numbers.

'It was truly incredible. It may have been only the second time he bought a ticket. And I wasn't ready to share with her yet, so I told her, "Absolutely not, mother"'.

Wahl moved to New Jersey from MI in July after getting a new job at AAK Food Service in Hillside NJ.

So how does Wahl plan to spend the multi-million dollar prize?

Richard Wahl speaks during a news conference introducing him as the $533 million Mega Millions jackpot winner at the New Jersey Lottery headquarters Friday

Mega Millions is played in 44 states and Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

'Actually the weird thing is my mom actually called me before I wanted to tell her and told me "I heard somebody in New Jersey won the lottery, was it you?"

He chose to take the jackpot as a lump sum cash payout, which lottery officials said comes out to $324.6 million. "It's not only life-changing money for me, but I want it to be life-changing money for others".

Wahl declined to discuss his family, citing security concerns, but said he told no one about the win until he met with financial advisers - even his mother.

Wahl told reporters he checked the numbers on the ticket with his wife more than a dozen times as they tried to come to terms with the fact that they were New Jersey's newest multimillionaires.
