Police, protesters clash in Armenia as leader stays in power

Clashes between police and protesters in Yerevan injure 46

Protesters took to the streets after opposition leader Nikol Pashinian called on Armenians to stage rallies to prevent Sarkisian's political transition. In 2015 Armenia had a constitutional referendum as a result of which the form of government has changed from semi-presidential to parliamentary.

Clashes broke out in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, as protester attempted to storm the parliament building. Authorities said 46 people - including six police - sought medical help.

The protesters led by Nikol Pashinian, a prominent opposition figure, were stopped while marching along Marshal Bagramian Avenue from a nearby street intersection in downtown Yerevan which has been occupied by them since Friday.

Yerevan Police have detained some of the participants of a mass protest that has hit Armenia's capital since 13 April.

Meanwhile, the national police issued a written appeal to Pashinian saying that the protests will be forcibly broken up if he continues defy their warnings.

The protesters have been chanting "Serzh the liar" about the ex-president, who in the past said that he had no intention of becoming the country's prime minister after the end of his second presidential term.

Kane was adamant he got a touch on Eriksen's wicked free-kick at Stoke , which turned out to be the decisive moment in a 2-1 win. Elsewhere, Manchester United have a doubleheader this game-week as they face West Brom on Sunday and Bournemouth on Wednesday.

"Serzh Sargsyan must see that he has no Armenia to rule in and no people to rule over".

In 2017, Pashinian set up his own party and was elected to parliament as head of the Yelk election bloc.

Pashinian suffered injuries to his hands and right eye and was rushed to hospital in a police auto.

According to several local media reports, riot police used batons and stun grenades against the crowd when demonstrators tried to break the police cordon blocking the way to the parliament building.

Serzh Sarkisian, a shrewd former military officer, has been in charge of the landlocked South Caucasus nation of 2.9 million since winning a presidential vote in 2008. The protests a decade ago drew tens of thousands of supporters of Sargsyan's defeated rival Armenia's first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, ending in bloody clashes that claimed the lives of 10 people, after which a 20-day state of emergency was imposed.
