Roma stun Barca to reach Champions League semi-finals

Ivan Rakitic

Daniele De Rossi celebrated Roma's dramatic Champions League quarter-final victory over Barcelona, but insisted his side are not done in the competition yet.

In a stunning unforeseen turn of events, tournament favourites FC Barcelona astonishingly bottled a home-leg lead of 4-1 last night, as they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of A.S. Roma at Stadio Olimpico.

"I don't care about becoming part of Roma's history".

Roma pulled off the impossible on Wednesday night. Barcelona had a comfortable lead from the first leg and consequently, were effortless on the ball throughout the first half of the match. Roma dominated the game, they believed in themselves. "Today is a great moment, but it's not enough", added Di Francesco. - "Go Roma" in Roman dialect - followed by two heart emojis in yellow and red.

Barcelona: Marc-Andre ter Stegen 7, Nelson Semedo 6, Samuel Umtiti 6, Gerard Pique 6, Jordi Alba 6, Sergio Busquets 6, Sergi Roberto 6, Ivan Rakitic 5, Andres Iniesta 6, Luis Suarez 5, Lionel Messi 6.

Roma capitalized on its aerial threat through Dzeko and Patrik Schick and its stifling defense forced Barcelona into a series of uncharacteristic misplaced passes.

"It's hard [to keep calm] when you score the third goal, and the third goal obviously brings you the semifinal, but [Di Francesco] was clever, there were still 10 minutes to play, with added time nearly 15 minutes to play and we know what Barcelona can do, not just in 15 minutes but in one minute", Dzeko said. "For that reason they were better in all aspects tonight".

Roma advance to the last four for the first time since reaching the European Cup final in 1984. We have to try and win them because we have not won anything yet.

"It's painful because no one expected this after the advantage we had but you realise what the reality of the Champions League is like when you do things badly", a visibly distraught Iniesta told reporters.

"When it comes from Milner it is not offside, and we go to half-time 2-0". The capital city club have now kept five clean sheets in their last five Champions League home games.

The Giallorossi lost the first leg 4-1 at Camp Nou, but that Edin Dzeko away goal proved decisive to win the quarter-final.

"Well when you lose a match like this you think about everything that went wrong. But they were really, really strong", Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said through a translator.
