Sensex Edges Lower, Nifty Holds 10600; Bharti Airtel Rises 3%

Sensex today ICICI Bank top loser TCS bucks trend index slips in red after opening higher

The BSE Sensex after opening at 34,593.17 points touched a high of 34,611.73 and low of 34,536.70 points.

Indian shares rose on Monday, with software services exporter Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) crossing $100 billion in market capitalisation, which helped boost sentiment in IT stocks.

The major Sensex gainers on Tuesday were: RIL, up 3.70 per cent at Rs 969.75; Yes Bank, up 3.31 per cent at Rs 323.40; M&M, up 1.94 per cent at Rs 838.45; Adani Ports, up 1.74 per cent at Rs 391.95; and ICICI Bank, up 1.66 per cent at Rs 284.20.

The NSE Nifty, after shuttling between 10,636.80 and 10,569, finally settled 29.65 points, or 0.28 per cent higher at 10,614.35.

Index heavyweights Reliance Industries, HDFC and ICICI Bank helped the Nifty close above 10,600-mark for the first time since February 5, 2018, though the pressure in metals and technology stocks capped upside. China's Shanghai Composite index too was down 0.59 per cent.

The rupee depreciated 21 paise to 66.59 against the U.S. dollar today at the interbank foreign exchange due to appreciation of the greenback amid rising USA bond yields and surge in global crude oil prices.

The BSE market breadth was bullish with 432 advances and 322 declines. Chinese shares climbed 1.9 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 1 percent.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 680.99 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 508.55 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

The broader markets underperformed the benchmark index, with the S&P BSE mid-cap index closing lower by 0.02 per cent and the small-cap index by 0.13 per cent.
