Spotify's free mobile experience is about to get a lot better

One of the previously premium-only features they will now be able to access are personalized discovery playlists and it's on-demand and not just shuffle.

As a user saves songs to a playlist, Spotify will suggest similar songs based on what you add. Users will be able to play any song they want from any of those playlists and as many times as they want without having to shuffle. According to Tech Crunch, the new version does away with that, allowing users to listen to whatever song they want as many times as they want, but there's some heavy restrictions. It will also impact the battery less. It's all part of Spotify's continued commitment to the future of ad-supported streaming.

Spotify now boasts 90 million free subscribers and that service is essentially a loss leader meant to get users liking the music and then buy a [commercial free] subscription.

It operates using a "freemium" service model, meaning that its basic features are free with some restrictions and advertisements while additional services are available via paid subscription.

As for exactly what's new in "personalized discovery", by far the most important change is the addition of on-demand playlists. After all, users in the free tier of Spotify aren't allowed to download tracks for offline listening.

Spotify's free tier now offers access to shuffled playlists, but on-demand playback is kept behind the Premium paid tier.
