Spotify's free mobile experience is about to get a lot better

Spotify

One of the previously premium-only features they will now be able to access are personalized discovery playlists and it's on-demand and not just shuffle.

As a user saves songs to a playlist, Spotify will suggest similar songs based on what you add. Users will be able to play any song they want from any of those playlists and as many times as they want without having to shuffle. According to Tech Crunch, the new version does away with that, allowing users to listen to whatever song they want as many times as they want, but there's some heavy restrictions. It will also impact the battery less. It's all part of Spotify's continued commitment to the future of ad-supported streaming.

Spotify now boasts 90 million free subscribers and that service is essentially a loss leader meant to get users liking the music and then buy a [commercial free] subscription.

It operates using a "freemium" service model, meaning that its basic features are free with some restrictions and advertisements while additional services are available via paid subscription.

As for exactly what's new in "personalized discovery", by far the most important change is the addition of on-demand playlists. After all, users in the free tier of Spotify aren't allowed to download tracks for offline listening.

Spotify's free tier now offers access to shuffled playlists, but on-demand playback is kept behind the Premium paid tier.

Is this new free version enough to make you switch over from Apple Music? Rolling out over the coming weeks to iOS and Android, the app now has cleaner visuals and easier methods of navigation.

For those who use Spotify Premium, this news is of little to no outcome.

The announcement was made during a recent event in NY, where Spotify provided several interesting details about its service.

Why bother about paying for Spotify when all the improvements are free.

Gustav Soderstrom, chief R&D officer, said that its new mobile app reduces data consumption by 75 percent. But in even bigger news, Free on Spotify will now let you create your own playlists. This is their first major announcement since they went public earlier this month and this will, of course, please their over 90 million free users.

Spotify didn't forget to revamp its aging user interface.
