Toronto van attack suspect faces murder charges in court

Onlookers try to help the injured before police and paramedics arrive

Alek Minassian, 25, appeared in a Toronto court on Tuesday and was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder after a rental van mowed down pedestrians along bustling Yonge Street in the north end of the city Monday.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders was asked during a news conference Monday evening about Lam's arrest of the suspect without use of force.

Hospital officials said 12 of the 14 injured remain hospitalized.

The man identified as the van driver who traumatized Toronto was a socially troubled computer studies graduate who briefly joined Canada's military previous year and posted a hostile message toward women on Facebook moments before his deadly rampage, according to accounts by police and his acquaintances on Tuesday.

Const. Ken Lam worked as a Bell engineer for over 10 years before he chose to join the Toronto Police Service, following in his father's footsteps - a decision Lam Sr. couldn't be more proud of.

"We need to shift the focus away from this term - incel - and the hate that it's representing", she said, adding, "this is not the time for the media to build a banner for this group to rally around".

The court appearance came as Canadian authorities and the public sought to make sense of what appeared to be one of the deadliest mass murders in the country's modern history. The official agreed to reveal that information only if not quoted by name.

Authorities released few details in the case, saying the investigation was still underway, with witnesses being interviewed and surveillance video being examined.

The South Korean ministry said 17 other South Koreans were initially reported to have been out of touch following the attack, but the safety of all of them has been confirmed.
