Trump declares DACA 'dead,' urges Congress to act on border

Their journey north sparked a Trump tweetstorm

The U-T featured an article regarding "Trump tweets no deal on DACA debate" (April 2): The writer stated "Trump thrust the future of millions of immigrants who were brought illegally to the United States as children into peril ..."

Minutes after wishing the nation a happy Easter on Sunday, Trump denounced "liberal" laws that he said were preventing Border Patrol agents from doing their jobs.

Taking to his Twitter account, Trump asked Republicans to pass tougher immigration laws now, claiming "our country is being stolen".

Trump began tweeting over the weekend on immigration from Florida, threatening to pull out of a free trade agreement with Mexico unless it does more to stop people from crossing into the U.S. He claimed they're coming to take advantage of protections granted certain immigrants.

President Trump continued his tirade against Mexico and Democrats, declaring that the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was "dead". "DACA is dead because the Democrats didn't care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon. No longer works", Trump tweeted, before adding, "Must build wall".

On Facebook, the conservative author Ann Coulter, who had condemned Trump for not securing border wall funding so far this year, urged the president to show and not tell.

Trump promised during the 2016 presidential campaign to build a Southern border wall to stop illegal immigration and drugs from Mexico, but Congress has frustrated him by not moving as quickly as he wants to provide money for construction.

Trump also tweeted that the US must build a border wall, but argued that "Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!"

How Sloane Stephens' subtle athleticism brought her another big title
There's a fair gap between No. 10 and the top players; for example, she's more than 1,000 points behind No. 8 Venus Williams. Obviously, I missed the last clay court season, so I'm super excited to get back out there.

Trump then tied the North American Free Trade Agreement, now being re-negotiated by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, to Trump's campaign promise to build a border wall along the southern US border. "They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws". As I previously reported, seven of the top 24 countries for DACA applicants with the highest acceptance rate are in Asia, Europe and the Caribbean.

Under current immigration policies, asylum seekers that prove a "credible fear" of returning home may be released while they await adjudication if they don't present a security or flight risk. The president, however, rejected immigration proposals from congressional Democrats in recent months. Trump gave lawmakers until March to find a legislative solution for the so-called Dreamer population.

"Because when the president says DACA is no more, that he's done with trying to get a deal on DACA, that leaves hundreds and thousands of individuals who are now protected under the program exposed to the possibility of being deported", Superville says. Trump included a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers in his "Four Pillars" plan for immigration reform.

The Fox headline was "Caravan of illegal immigrants headed to U.S".

Finally, the president tweeted about "unredacted documents requested by Congress", calling it "an embarrassment to our country!"

Trump - who has spent his time in Palm Beach hanging out with family, playing golf with friends and watching television - may have tweeted in response to commentary on Fox News, which he is known to view regularly. U.S. and worldwide law protect asylum-seekers' right to apply for protections from persecution.

Trump's tweets come amid tense negotiations over NAFTA between his administration and that of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. "An inaccurate news report should not serve to question this strong cooperation", he wrote on Twitter, apparently referring to the Fox News story.
