Unclear why 8-year-old slashed students

Students organize protest in front of Old Main in response to safety concerns

On Monday, the Sauk Rapids police were summoned to the Pleasantview Elementary School after an 8-year-old boy attacked three of his classmates with a kitchen knife.

School Superintendent Bruce Watkins told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that after the second-grader put his backpack away, he began stabbing the other students.

The child who brought the knife, and his parents, were brought to the Sauk Rapids police department. The students were ages eight, nine, and 13.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where he allegedly killed 17 people, is seen on a closed circuit television screen during a bond hearing in front of Broward Judge Kim Mollica at the Broward County Courthouse on February 15, 2018 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The Minnesota elementary school student used a similar knife to attack his classmates. He was interviewed and released to his parents. Once the police arrived, the assailant was in the school counselor's office while the victims received medical care in the nurse's office. Police, ambulance and parents were called and responded. He said he didn't know if the boy had been bullied, or if he had mental health issues.
