2 Hospitalized Suspect in Custody Following Active Shooting Situation at Indiana Middle School

A male student has been detained in connection with the shooting, Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said at a press conference Friday morning.

Update: One of the injuries was an ankle fracture, the CBS affiliate reports.

Investigators believe the student acted alone, though he didn't release the boy's name or the names of the two victims, who were taken to hospitals in Indianapolis.

"If he didn't do anything he probably would have continued shooting and a lot more of us would have been injured and possibly killed, so it was just something that not most people would have done but he was really fearless to do it", the student said.

Family members confirmed that the teacher is Jason Seaman.

Video from that news station showed scores of parents swarming the high school, trying to reach their children.

One person was injured but it was not clear if that person had been injured by a gunshot, Chatterton said.

Parents wait while a SWAT officer passes outside Noblesville High School after a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School on May 25, 2018 in Noblesville, Ind. Neighbors told him they had seen FBI and ATF teams arrive in unmarked cars around 11:30 a.m. and described the home that appeared to be the focus of the investigation as "newer homeowners and a nice family".

There have been 23 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed so far this year - an average of more than one shooting a week. "We know there are also many other victims as well, students that observed this, teachers that observed this, law enforcement officers that observed this, and we're gonna try to get through it". Police asked parents to have their ID ready and to be patient. "You'll be proud of them, too".

He added that the shooter was taken into custody either in the classroom or nearby and was not injured.

Another seventh-grade Noblesville student told local media her science teacher charged the gunman, after the shooter entered the classroom and fired a shot at a fellow student. "When the safety of the kids is at hand, it's not surprising to me that he was going to do what he had to do".

They are police officers who are specially trained to work at schools.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected by this awful situation", his statement said.

Noblesville, which is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Indianapolis, is home to about 50,000 people.

Chad Lancaster, who has an eighth-grade daughter and sixth-grade son at the middle school, said he heard from his ex-wife in a phone call.
