Amazon Vows To Create 3000 High-Tech Jobs In Vancouver

PostRend

Another major Canadian city, Toronto, is still in the running for Amazon's official second North American headquarters.

Amazon's expansion is another vote of confidence in Vancouver's growing technology scene, which has been bolstered by Canada's relatively open guest-worker laws and its proximity to technology giants in the San Francisco Bay Area and Greater Seattle. Currently, the company's Vancouver workers produce new products and services for the company's global retail business and Amazon Web Services. Even without large subsidies, Amazon's second headquarters would drive up the already high cost of housing in Boston, overburden crowded roads and rail lines, and gobble up scarce labor, some critics worry. Amazon noted that its Boston-based machine learning scientists and engineers have played a key role in building Alexa's conversational AI through cutting-edge research and developments in machine learning.

It's confirmation of a move that has been much-talked-about in Boston's tech and real estate circles in recent months, as WS Development negotiated a lease for a full, 430,000-square-foot building in its Seaport Square project and $5 million in city property tax breaks for Amazon. It was sold in 2013.

QuadReal said construction of the entire project will begin in January, 2019, and be completed in mid-2023. Amazon is expected to announce the location of its HQ2 later in 2018. They now operate a 156,000 square-foot location in TELUS Garden which opened to Amazon employees in 2015. And on top of Monday's announcement, in November previous year, Amazon announced it would be expanding into another downtown site on Dunsmuir Street, which will open in 2020.

"There are many reasons why industry giants like Amazon choose to settle and grow in Canada", he said. "Our work force is highly educated, skilled and diverse".
