American clothing brand Gap 'terribly sorry' over China map shirt omitting Taiwan

American clothing retailer Gap apologized for printing incomplete Chinese map on T-shirts for sales outside China

The apology came after a person posted pictures of the T-shirt on Chinese social media network Weibo, saying that Chinese territories, including South Tibet, the island of Taiwan and the South China Sea, were omitted from the map.

While Taiwan is self-governed, only a minority of countries recognize its sovereignty as a nation independent of China.

USA clothes giant GAP said it was "extremely sorry" for selling a T-shirt with an "incomplete" map of China, after it was accused of being disrespectful to the country's territorial sovereignty.

Gap, in a statement posted on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, admitted that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets "mistakenly failed to reflect the correct map of China".

The US company issued its apology on Weibo late Monday, saying it "respects the integrity of China's sovereignty and territory". "We are doing internal checks to correct the mistake as soon as possible", Gap said.

Gap quickly apologized, even though it appears the T-shirt is not for sale in China.

The White House in early May called Chinese demands, that over 30 global airlines including a few in the USA, remove from their websites any data that might suggest that Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were not part of China, as being Orwellian nonsense.

In January, Australia's Qantas Airways changed its website classification of Taiwan and Hong Kong from separate countries to Chinese territories, blaming its earlier approach on an "oversight".

The Chinese Civil Aviation Administration had sent a notice to 36 foreign airlines, including a number of United States carriers, on April 25, asking them to comply with Beijing's standards, according to the White House.
