Bolton: US Could Sanction European Companies Doing Business With Iran

US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said Sunday that he will work hard for "next days and weeks" can reach an agreement with European allies on Iran "that works truly", having broken this week hit in 2015 Despite appeals against allied countries.

"Countries that continue to deal with Iran could face USA sanctions", he said, also suggesting that European countries may change their stance on Trump's decision to withdraw from the deal.

Washington's withdrawal from the Iran deal has upset European allies, cast uncertainty over global oil supplies and raised the risk of conflict in the Middle East.

Pompeo, who is barely a fortnight into his new job, told Fox News Sunday that he had been tasked by the president "to work to strike a deal that achieves the outcomes that protect America". "The policy of the administration is to make sure that Iran never gets close to deliverable nuclear weapons", Bolton said on the ABC program "This Week".

I think the Europeans will see that it's in their interest, ultimately, to come along with us.

White House national security adviser John Bolton, who has in the past suggested the US government should push for a change in government in Iran, said on Sunday that is not the Trump administration's current policy.

"The imbecile Trump's pretexts and insane move following a psychological war and breach of contract and unilateral pullout from the [nuclear deal] and his idiotic remarks against the powerful Iran revealed again the imperialistic nature of the criminal American leaders", one group of protesters in Tehran said in a statement.

"I've written and said a lot of things over the years when I was a complete free agent", Bolton said when pressed on the issue regime change in Iran on CNN's "State of the Union".

Bolton on Sunday reiterated the administration line that the US wants to work with its partners in new ways to counter a whole range of Iranian activity ― from its nuclear development to its support for forces around the Middle East that often work against American interests.

While he has committed to remaining in the nuclear agreement, French President Emmanuel Macron floated the idea of a supplemental deal on Iran during a recent visit to Washington. Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China are still signed on to the deal.

As a private citizen, Bolton in the past has suggested that the United States push for a change in government in Iran. Zarif hopes to redesign the deal without American involvement.

Although most analysts believe the USA withdrawal has effectively scuppered the agreement, Iran's foreign minister talked up the prospects of its survival on Sunday while visiting China, another of the signatories.
