Brussels - Iran's Zarif says talks with European countries on right path

US exceptionalism Trump-style Believing no deal can work without America

Javad Zarif, who has remained Iran's top diplomat since negotiating the deal during two years of talks, spoke to an global audience in a YouTube video.

To recap, oil prices rose by 3 percent after Donald Trump announced that he will pull the United States out of the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

While Russia has condemned Washington for its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Moscow remains less exposed to the economic consequences of United States sanctions than Europe and its companies could even benefit from the move.

The two leaders agreed for their teams to hold discussions on the potential impact of USA sanctions on firms doing business in Iran.

"I believe we are on the right track to move forward in order to make sure that the interests of all the JCPOA's remaining participants, particularly Iran, will be preserved and guaranteed", Zarif said after a one-on-one meeting with Mogherini, referring to the deal's official name, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

"The Europeans have between 45 and 60 days to give the necessary guarantees to safeguard Iranian interests and compensate the damages caused by the United States pullout", Icana.ir reported. Trump called the deal unfair and doubted that it would limit the nuclear ambitions of Tehran.

"We're not talking about annexes or modifications of the agreement at all, we're talking about setting up concrete measures" to preserve the deal, Mogherini said. "Now, that will not happen!"

The leaders of the three leading European nations had all sought to convince Mr Trump to stick to the agreement struck under the Obama administration, saying that it was the best way of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Ebola outbreak in the DRC
To date, 393 potential Ebola-carrying contacts have been identified and are being followed-up with. On average, about 50% of people who become ill with Ebola die.

Although most analysts believe the United States withdrawal has effectively scuppered the agreement, Iran's foreign minister talked up the prospects of its survival on Sunday while visiting China, another of the signatories.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi (R) holds talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Beijing, capital of China, May 13, 2018.

In a statement, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said after talks with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian, that both countries were determined "to conserve the essence of the Iran nuclear deal". But they were also targeting their own government.

The two top diplomats also discussed the latest situation in the occupied Palestine and the Israeli regime's recent atrocities against Palestinians.

"This was never where we hoped we would be", O'Sullivan said, "with a heavy heart".

"The Europeans have repeated on several occasions that they will not be able to resist U.S. sanctions".

"We do not want to let Iran use the U.S. financial markets and financial system and transact in dollars until they agree that not only will they not have a nuclear weapon now, but we've put in provisions that they will never have one", Mnuchin said.
