Cyclone Mekunu nears Oman's coast, kills 12-year-old girl

Cyclone tears through Yemeni island Socotra

On Friday, a 12-year-old girl succumbed to injuries after a gust of wind knocked her against a wall in Ayn Sahalnoot, Salalah, amid heavy rains before cyclone Mekunu made landfall in Salalah.

More than 10 inches of rain has fallen in Oman's third largest city Salalah, with the deluge amounting to three years of its typical rainfall in one day.

Many officers rode in Royal Oman Police SUVs with chicken wire over the windows, likely because their other vehicles weren't tall enough to maneuver through the flood water. Strong waves smashed into empty tourist beaches. At least 40 people were missing, they added.

Oman´s civil aviation meanwhile chose to reopen Salalah Airport on Sunday, which had been closed for the past three days.

The main road linking the airport to Hadibo, the island's main city, has been reopened, Mahrous said.

Roughly 600 people, mostly labourers, took refuge at the West Salalah School, with some sleeping on mattresses on the floors of classrooms. "Two Indian cargo ships have gone missing, losing five of their crew members".

Jacksonville leading state in growth, according to Census Bureau
Rounding out the state's top three for 2017 are Murfreesboro, with an increase of 3.8 percent, and Clarksville, with 2.5 percent. Other Central Oregon cities also grew larger in the Census Bureau's eyes than PSU's, and that's fairly common over the years.

Authorities relocated over 230 families to sturdier buildings and other areas on Socotra, including those more inland and in the island's mountains, Yemeni security officials said.

Rescue teams on Friday found alive four Indian sailors who were among 17 who had been reported missing on Thursday when the cyclone hit Socotra's port, and search operations are continuing for eight Indian sailors.

In neighbouring Oman, authorities announced through the official news agency they were taking "necessary precautions" in case the cyclone hits the Gulf sultanate.

Mekunu moved north-northwestwards on Wednesday morning and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centered at 7am over the southwest Arabian Sea near latitude 11.2°N and longitude 55.9°E, about 270km southeast of Socotra Islands and 670km south-southeast of Salalah, according to IMD.

37% of Socotra's plant species, 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species do not occur anywhere else in the world.
