Danica Patrick fans tweet well-wishes after her Indy 500 crash

Danica Patrick hugs Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers before climbing into her car before the start of the Indianapolis 500 auto race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis Sunday

Danica Patrick's professional driving career came to a close on Sunday after crashing out of the Indianapolis 500. "He's been in his yellow suit - I don't think I've seen him out of his yellow suit since we got here this month". She had six top-10 finishes in her previous seven Indianapolis starts but ran outside the top 10 for most of Sunday's race after starting seventh. "I've had so many wins, so many poles".

Just before the singing of the national anthem, with the crowd as quiet as it would be all day, one fan screamed from the grandstands, "Let's go Danica!"

"I thought the guys' stops were great, the whole time, there was one out-lap where I caught a weird string of traffic, and that's all it takes".

Power dominated the final stages of the race, once those taking a fuel strategy gamble had pitted or backed off to save fuel to make the finish - the strongest of which was Scott Dixon. Chip Ganassi Racing's Ed Jones also spun into the wall ten laps before Danica Patrick. I said "mate, we had a good feeling, I told you". He is the only active driver with three Indy 500 wins and has been eager to get a fourth. I couldn't imagine winning a race in front of this many people.

Now, this time, we're going to have a good chat tonight and I'm sure share a beer. He has 34 wins in IndyCar now, tying him with Al Unser Jr. for most on the career list.

NY just lost another of its greats with Tom Wolfe's passing
Three of his works were adapted into movies: The Right Stuff , Bonfire Of The Vanities and The Last American Hero . He laughed about his trademark "feistiness" in the book to CBS News and said, "Well, I just try to bring truth".

"I was definitely nervous", she said, "but I found myself most of the time on the grid feeling confused". While the cause of the wreck remains undetermined, Chip Ganassi Racing's Ed Jones suffered a similar incident just laps before without coming into contact with another vehicle.

Still, she is respected and in some cases revered at Indianapolis, where fans still remember her leading the 2009 race before finishing third. Sebastien Bourdais, three-time victor Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan also lost control and wrecked. But all three needed enough gas to get to the finish line, and it was Power who was frantically chasing them down.

Defending champion Takuma Sato also crashed out after running into the back of James Davison's vehicle. Kanaan's crash with 12 laps remaining set up a final restart with Oriol Servia out front.

But 13 years ago, Patrick was named rookie of the year, had a record-breaking season and led for 19 laps in the Indy 500, as NPR's Cheryl Corley reports.
