Facebook suspends 'around 200' apps, reviewing misuse of data

Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday

Zuckerberg testified for more than ten hours before the US Congress last month.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg will meet with leaders of the European Parliament in Brussels to talk about privacy issues, a company spokesman in Washington said Tuesday.

"The founder and CEO of Facebook has accepted our invitation and will be in Brussels as soon as possible, hopefully already next week", Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, said in a statement on Wednesday.

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors.

The UK Parliament has summoned Zuckerberg to testify before its digital and culture committee. And several of the US lawmakers often appeared to fail to grasp the technical details of Facebook's operations and data privacy.

Zuckerberg's visit comes with a strict new European data protection law due to take effect on May 25.

Personal data from around 2.7 million Facebook users in the EU was shared with analytics firm Cambridge Analytica, the European Commission announced on Friday (6 April). "It must be a public hearing - why not a Facebook Live", he asked in a Tweet. "It is a step in the right direction towards restoring confidence", Tajani said.

"Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation", Tajani said.

Facebook has come under huge scrutiny over how it protects personal data after Cambridge Analytica, a Donald Trump campaign-linked political consultancy, gained improper access to the personal information of up to 87 million people.

Mr Zuckerberg is likely meet European Union politicians in the same week as he attends a summit in France with President Emmanuel Macron.

Facebook said Monday that it has suspended "around 200" applications from its platform "pending a thorough investigation into whether they did in fact misuse any data".

Damian Collins, the head of the United Kingdom parliament's media committee, has said he hopes Zuckerberg would take advantage of his trip to Europe next week to visit London and testify there as well.

The lawmakers were not satisfied with Schroepfer's answers, and called on Zuckerberg to testify. Its media committee even threatened to issue an official summons when Zuckerberg next enters the country, but he's still refusing to attend.
