Germany slam Ozil and Gundogan over photos with Turkey's Erdogan

President Erdogan

Germany internationals Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan have been criticised by the German Football Association (DFB) for meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in London on Sunday. "To my dear president, with my respects", Gundogan wrote on his.

"Football and the DFB stand for values that are not sufficiently respected by Mr Erdogan", the DFB's Grindel tweeted.

Erdogan is a keen soccer fan and as a young man played the game at a semi-professional level.

RSF says over 100 journalists have been arrested, 140 media outlets shut down and at least 889 press cards rescinded since a crackdown began in 2016.

"It is a bad mistake to mix politics with football as can be seen from the German president's example". Citigroup Inc. on Monday said they closed out a long dollar-lira position, and moved to a neutral stance on Turkish government notes, from underweight, as policy makers may be concerned about sharp moves in the lira and the central bank may be forced to hike rates.

But the images caused a furore in Germany, with lawmaker Cem Ozdemir, himself of Turkish origin, reminding the players that "the president of an global German footballer is called Frank-Walter Steinmeier", referring to the German head of state.

A commentary in top-selling Bild, which ran the photos on its front page, said: "If you have a moral position, you don't laugh into the camera with Erdogan". "But I am also sympathetic towards them". The main question is whether the two German national players still fit into our German team.

Former Germany worldwide Oliver Bierhoff, now team co-ordinator at the DFB, warned Ozil and Gundogan that their appearance alongside Erdogan would be discussed if and when they report to the squad before the World Cup.

Gundogan insisted he "didn't want to make a political statement with this photo and even less so campaign for his election".

German national team manager Oliver Bierhoff said he would raise the issue with the players.

The statement comes one day before both Ozil and Gundogan are likely to be named to Germany's preliminary squad for this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.

"Posing in a London luxury hotel with the despotic Erdogan and courting him as "my president" while he is oppressing democrats and imprisoning critical journalists in Turkey, is a gross foul", Sevim Dagdelen of the opposition Left Party said.

"Such actions will increase tensions and insecurity in the world", Ali Larijani said, adding that they would not go "unanswered".
