Guard killed, 3 kidnapped in DR Congo's Virunga park

Ebola Congo British tourists kidnap

Last month, five rangers and a driver were killed in a militia ambush, the park said.

It is believed they were visiting the world-famous gorilla sanctuary the Virunga National Park.

A spokesperson for the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) said: "For the moment the [ICCN] can not communicate much about the incident because the hostages are still in captivity".

Two western tourists were kidnapped Friday in Virunga National Park, in an ambush in the North Kivu province, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). One of the park guards who accompanied the tourists was killed in the ambush, said Joel Wengamulay, the park's communications director, according to United Nations radio.

A park spokesman told CNN that security staff were immediately deployed after there learned of the incident.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, it is home to about a quarter of the world's critically endangered mountain gorillas, as well as eastern lowland Grauer's gorillas, chimpanzees, okapi, elephants and lions.

The threatened Virunga National Park in DR Congo announced on Thursday it has banned the felling of trees throughout the nature reserve.

It is Africa's oldest national park and is Africa's most biologically diverse protected area of some 7,800 square kilometres (3,000 square miles), according to its website.
