IPL: Mumbai Indians put Kings XI Punjab in to bat

Chris Gayle continued his magnificent run in IPL 2018 as the West Indian opener notched yet another fifty for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Holkar Stadium, Indore, here on Friday.

Needing 36 from the final three overs, Krunal and Rohit combined for 20 runs from the six deliveries, sending them into 19th over requiring only 16 for the win.

Kings XI Punjab openers, Chris Gayle and Lokesh Rahul began on a great note and stitched together a decent 54-run stand. It was KXIP's third defeat in eight games as they remained at fourth in the points table with 10 points. However, just after his half-century, Gayle was dismissed.

Punjab bowlers, Mujeeb Ur Rahman picked up two wickets whereas Stoinis and Andrew Tye got one wicket each.

Jasprit Bumrah (1/19) recovered from being smashed for six first up by Rahul to end as the pick of the bowlers.

When hopes looked bleak for Mumbai, skipper Rohit Sharma played his shots well and kept, the scoreboard ticking, with the required run rate under control. Their late flourish was preceded by Suryakumar Yadav's third IPL fifty. Ishan Kishan hasn't been able to continue the form which he showed during the initial phase of the tournament.

Krunal hit 31 not out off 12 balls, including four fours and two sixes, and Sharma made 24 not out off 15 balls to help the Mumbai Indians to 176-4.

Punjab closed its innings at 174-6 after being put in to bat.

WICKET! Mayank Markande finally gets the breakthrough, as he removes KL Rahul for 24. And two overs later, McClenaghan was sent roaring over the rooftop of Holkar Stadium. Yuvraj's efforts: a run-a-ball 14, taking his season's tally to 34 runs in six innings, the move to drop Manoj Tiwary after just one game looking even more baffling. It was an eventful over though as Karun Nair erred in his call and got Yuvraj, one of the three changes Punjab made, run out at the batting end.

However, KXIP lost their way in the middle overs with Nair and Axar Patel (13 off 12) getting out after promising starts. In the first six overs, they just managed to hit 49 runs without a loss of any wicket.

If it was not for Marcus Stoinis, KXIP would have ended up way short of the expected mark.

Stoinis then played a cameo of a 15-ball 29, while Mayank Agarwal chipped in with 11 runs down the order to help Punjab reach a healthy score.
