'Israel will make Hamas pay:' Intelligence minister denies Gaza ceasefire

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gestures chicken wings as he enters a cabinet meeting

"An agreement was reached to return to the (2014) ceasefire understandings in the Gaza Strip", Hamas' deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, said.

Palestinians and their supporters say most of the protesters were unarmed civilians and Israel was using excessive force against them.

The attacks continued throughout Tuesday, triggering dozens of rocket sirens in southern Israel and wounding five Israelis, one of them suffering moderate injuries.

Israeli cabinet minister Arieh Deri told Israel's Army Radio that he expected calm to be restored.

Indonesia strongly condemned Israel's brutal actions against Palestinians during recent border protests held to mark 70 years since the Nakba, when almost one million Palestinians were forced out of their homes to make way for the creation of the state of Israel.

The confrontation followed weeks of deadly demonstrations and clashes along the Gaza-Israel border.

A Palestinian official in Gaza said Egypt was in touch with Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Israel to stop the fighting deteriorating into a wider conflict.

Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz denied ceasefire claims by Hamas.

Later Jihad spokesman Dawoud Shihab said an Egyptian-brokered agreement had been reached to return calm.

Israeli soldiers stand guard next to an Israeli Iron Dome defence system, created to intercept and destroy incoming short-range rockets and artillery shells, deployed along the fence with the Gaza strip on May 29, 2018.

Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus said the most extensive strikes from Gaza since the 2014 war had drawn "the largest IDF retaliatory attack" since that conflict.

Whilst a senior Israeli official said Israel was not interested in war but would respond "forcefully" to any rocket fire from the Strip, the Times of Israel reported.

One mortar shell exploded near a kindergarten building, a military spokesperson said, damaging the structure. It alleged some of the mortar rounds fired throughout the day were supplied by Iran.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it had instructed embassies around the world to seek similar condemnations of the Palestinian fire.

"We must prepare to occupy Gaza as a part of efforts to eliminate Hamas rule", Shaked said, according to a translation by Palestinian-Israeli news website Arab48. Explosions shook the Palestinian enclave and smoke rose from the sites hit.

"The Security Council should be outraged and respond to this latest bout of violence directed at innocent Israeli civilians, and the Palestinian leadership needs to be held accountable for what they're allowing to happen in Gaza".

The pretext for the Islamic Jihad attack on Israel was the liquidation of three Islamic Jihad operatives who were attempting to infiltrate into Israel from the Rafah area earlier this week.

This includes Israeli settlement policies in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as the recent round of bloodshed in the Gaza, where Israeli fire killed over 100 Palestinians during mass protests along the Gaza border, Malki added.
