Jason Day storms into Wells Fargo Championship lead

Former world number one Jason Day hit the front by two strokes following the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship.

Adrift of overnight leader Peter Malnati by one shot at the halfway mark, Day's second successive 67 - which included five birdies and just one bogey - saw the 2015 US PGA Championship victor put himself in the box seat for his first title since January's Farmers Insurance Open.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy enjoyed a third round 66 which leaves him in a group of nine at three under.

As if to prove the point on Saturday, officials put the fun back in Quail Hollow, with 31 of 87 players posting scores in the 60s and more roars than this slice of North Carolina has seen since 2016, the last time the Wells Fargo was played at the venerable club before it underwent an intensive nip/tuck to prepare for the PGA.

"But the game is feeling good and hopefully I can play my way into the tournament this week and hopefully play my way into contention on the weekend". With his bare feet in the stream and the ball on the bank well above his feet, he hit a full shot to the back of the green for a two-putt par.

Tiger Woods failed to take advantage of a course that was 228 yards shorter and soft enough that the players actually found pitch marks on the greens.

Woods three-putted twice for bogey, including the par-3 sixth hole when he had a downhill birdie chance from about 18 feet. He's T31 and nine shots back and will need something special in Round 4 to justify his selection.

Peter Malnati, the 54-hole leader, fell back with a 4-over 75, and a leaderboard which lacked early star power is suddenly rich with recognizability as Day looks to close out another victory and move closer to his newfound goal.

'Free press makes for a stronger democracy'
In his message he said "A free press is essential for peace, justice and human rights for all". The World Press Freedom Day is being marked across the globe today.

PGA Tour rookie Aaron Wise was cruising along on Saturday at three under on his round and nine under for the tournament through 15 holes. Instead, he tried a flop shot and his wedge slid under the ball for a whiff.

He walked off the seventh green holding his putter, one hand on the grip, the other on the head, as if he wanted to break it in half.

Bryson DeChambeau also is at seven under thanks to a five-under 66 that featured six birdies and just one bogey.

"That was going to be a devastating hole", he said. If seven birdies and two bogeys is the downside, I'm riding him all the way to finish line tomorrow.

Day is in charge, but not in the clear. The previous player to win on the same course where he won a major the previous year was Jack Nicklaus in the 1973 Bing Crosby National Pro-am at Pebble Beach.

"I'd much rather be in this position than chasing", Day said.

A victory on Sunday would be Uihlein's first on the PGA Tour, and it would come after a streak of three missed cuts at the Houston Open, Valero Texas Open and Zurich Classic.

"I'm on a hot streak right now", Woods said. "I'm driving it better than I ever have before in my career". The Aussie matched Friday's 67 with another in Round 3 to post 10 under par and lead by two. I definitely think it's just around the corner.
