NY just lost another of its greats with Tom Wolfe's passing

Tom Wolfe at home in New York in 2016

He had lived in New York since 1962, when he joined The New York Herald Tribune as a reporter. The writer pioneered New Journalism, a 1960s and 1970s literary movement characterized by colorful longform pieces written in a subjective voice. These titles put him in a class with other great writers whose titles also became films like Truman Capote (1967's In Cold Blood) and Norman Mailer (1958's The Naked and the Dead).

The Right Stuff, Wolfe's 1979 account of the early days of the USA space program and the test pilots recruited for it, remains his best-selling work.

Published in 1987, it became one of the best-selling books of the decade and has often been called the quintessential novel of the era. Three of his works were adapted into movies: The Right Stuff, Bonfire Of The Vanities and The Last American Hero. He told CBS News that when he was starting out in his career, he was interested in fiction, but quickly found himself captivated by nonfiction.

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968) chronicled the rise of the hippy generation, while Radical Chic (1970) mocked the pretensions of Manhattan liberals and The Painted Word (1975) those of the art world. He laughed about his trademark "feistiness" in the book to CBS News and said, "Well, I just try to bring truth".

FOX renewals and cancellations: Are your favorite shows returning?
The cast and crew believe that their efforts helped the show stay afloat for at least one more season. Brooklyn Nine-Nine to TBS was even a brief rumor that gained traction before even that was shut down.

Wolfe, known for his signature white suit, was easily recognizable when taking walks in his neighborhood.

In 2016, Wolfe told CBS News that he had five more books planned.

"I'm saddened to hear of the passing of legendary author Tom Wolfe", wrote Jim Bridenstine, NASA's newly-installed administrator, on Twitter Tuesday.
