Shearer urges Liverpool coach Gerrard to take Rangers job

Zeljko Buvac

Following the loss to Celtic, who won the Scottish Premiership for a seventh consecutive year thanks to the win, reports emerged that Gerrard - who is in charge of Liverpool's Under-19s side - is Rangers' top target to take over for next season.

The former Liverpool and England captain broke his silence on the vacancy last night, confirming that he had held positive talks with the Rangers hierarchy.

"There is [interest]. I've held positive talks with them".

"The plan is, obviously I'm busy for the next couple of days now, but I'll pick it up on Thursday and we'll see if I can progress it".

The Gers are searching for a new manager after sacking former boss Graeme Murty in the aftermath of Sunday's 5-0 Old Firm defeat to Celtic.

Israel launched air strikes on naval targets in Gaza
Khalil al-Hayya, deputy head of Hamas in Gaza, told a separate news conference that the suspects "wanted to kill reconciliation". There is considerable fear among Israelis of a mass breach in which Gazans stream across, militants mixed in, wreaking havoc.

But, even if the 37-year-old, who is now the under-18 coach at Liverpool, accepts the job this week, he will not take charge until June.

Assistant coaches Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson have been put in temporary charge for Saturday's home game with Kilmarnock. He will take some time to consider his options, which include returning to his role at the Rangers Academy.

Rangers have already opened talks with the Liverpool youth coach Steven Gerrard and say they hope to be able to comment further on the managerial situation "in the near future".

In reality, Warnock will want to carry on the superb job which he has done with current club Cardiff City despite him and Rangers possibly being a match made in heaven while Gerrard is likely to start a new era at Ibrox.

Gerrard turned down the opportunity to manage MK Dons back in 2016 following his retirement from football, citing it was too early for him to step into full-time management.
