Sterlite protest: How it began; what next

Indian police kill 12 in protest over copper plant

MK Stalin and other DMK MLAs arrived in Tamil Nadu assembly on Tuesday wearing black clothes as a mark of protest against police firing on anti-Sterlite protestors in Thoothukudi.

Rahul Gandhi, leader of the main opposition Congress party, has described the deaths as "a brutal example of state-sponsored terrorism".

On Monday, the government issued orders to close Vedanta's first copper smelter unit, whose capacity is 400,000 tonne per annum.

According to Raja, post mortem has been done on seven bodies out of the 13 who were killed in the police firing.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a day after the government issued an order to shut down the copper unit, State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu issued an order, cancelling the allotment of land to Vedanta Limited for the proposed expansion.

He said police had been forced to act "since protesters disregarded a curfew, acted against the advice of police", and indulged in violence.

Israeli army kills two militants in Gaza border shelling: Medics
Just hours before this announcement, the IDF announced that it had deactivated an explosive wired to a border fence. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue.

"Peace has returned to Thoothukudi and it will continue and the district administration is working towards that", the deputy chief minister said.

Asked whether CRPF is being called in, Nanduri said no such decision has been taken but the situation is still tense. "Since Vedanta Sterlite is one of the largest copper producers in the country, manufacturers in sectors ranging from electrical to defence will have to turn to imports and that will push up the nation's annual import bill by an estimated $2 billion based on the current price", he added. "The postmortem on the bodies is being conducted and they will be handed over to families today".

Home minister of the state, Palaniswami told media that the police had to take action under unavoidable circumstances to protect public life and property as the protesters resorted to repeated violence. In 2013, the Supreme Court curiously found the company guilty of misrepresentation, unlicensed operation and polluting the environment, but allowed the company to operate after paying a small fine as it felt India needed the copper. The plant was ordered to be closed for a while after the allegations, by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board but later the National Green Tribunal let the plant reopen. He assured that a judicial inquiry would go into every aspect of what happened during the firing, including who ordered the shooting, quoted Deccan Herald.

The police shot dead protesters who were calling for the closure of the plant owned by Vedanta Resources. The company has appealed to government and authorities to ensure safety of our employees, facilities, and surrounding communities.

Tamil Nadu is one of India's most industrialised and prosperous states, and similar protests over environmental concerns have turned deadly.

Thoothukudi was also the site of violent protests in 2012 over a nuclear power plant in neighbouring Kudankulam district that left one person dead.
