Tesla Autopilot implicated in another emergency-vehicle crash

Tesla Autopilot crash in Laguna Beach

A Tesla driver suffered only minor injuries Tuesday after her sedan crashed into a parked Laguna Beach police auto while in autopilot mode, officials said.

Police have not released many details on the crash, but did say the Tesla driver sustained minor injuries and that the patrol vehicle was parked and unoccupied at the time.

Tesla's Autopilot is a semi-autonomous system that enables vehicles to drive themselves in certain conditions.

This is the latest crash involving a Tesla where the Autopilot feature was engaged, and marks the third time this year that one of the vehicles has hit a stationary emergency vehicle while in Autopilot mode. "Tesla has always been clear that Autopilot doesn't make the vehicle impervious to all accidents".

The driver told police the vehicle was operating on autopilot at the time of the crash. In January, a Model S crashed into a parked fire truck in California while on autopilot.

Tesla repeats time and time again that it's autopilot mode is not driverless functionality under a different name. The driver, Walter Huang, died after being taken to the hospital. No one was seriously injured in either incident, but the increased attention on Tesla's Autopilot features worked Tesla CEO Elon Musk into a Twitter fury, and has raised questions about Autopilot's real-world usage.

In Utah, a Model S in autopilot crashed into a fire truck stopped at a red light in May. In both cases. Tesla says.

The driver, a 65-year-old from Laguna Niguel, Calif., told officers that he had engaged the car's partial self-driving system, called Autopilot. In March, a Model X hit a highway divider while on autopilot in California, killing the driver.

In April, Bloomberg reported that safety advocates were becoming increasingly sceptical of Tesla's claims that autopilot mode reduced crashes by 40 per cent, saying the company was misrepresenting National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data that itself was not fully released to the public.
