Thousands gather to remember victims of Manchester attack

The event ended with a half-hour singalong

The school choir which accompanied Ariana Grande at the One Love Manchester benefit last summer (Jun17) were part of a massive city celebration on Tuesday (22May18).

Those inside the cathedral were joined by thousands more across the country in a minute's silence to remember those killed in the suicide bombing as they left the Manchester Arena.

Also on the song sheet was One Last Time, a hit for Grande, who had tweeted: 'Thinking of you all today and every day.

Manchester has come together to remember the bombing that devastated the city a year ago, with a message of defiance in the face of terror.

Earlier in the day she'd paid her own tribute to the victims, writing: 'I love you with all of me and am sending you all of the light and warmth I have to offer on this challenging day'.

Next on stage was 11-year-old Molly Catterall with a performance of Somewhere Only We Know in the style of the John Lewis TV advert, and then Hallelujah. "It will also give thanks to emergency workers who assisted on the ground and in the aftermath of the attack".

"The last thing I would ever want is for my fans to see something like that happen and think it won", she said. She included the bee emoji, which has always been a symbol of Manchester.

A remembrance service will be held at Manchester Cathedral Tuesday afternoon for the victims.

The hour-long service will include a minute silence that will be observed throughout the United Kingdom.

Along with the 22 people who were killed, more than 800 others, many of them children, were either physically or psychologically injured, according to police. The Lord Mayor of Manchester, June Hitchen, and the Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend David Walker, were also part of the event. Prince William and Prime Minister Theresa May will attend.

Around an hour and a half later, at 10.31pm, bells on Manchester Town Hall, St Ann's Church, and St Mary's RC Church rang to mark the time the bomb went off one year ago.
