Trump slams West Virginia GOP Senate candidate Blankenship

Shown here are maps and campaign signs at Republican headquarters in Wadsworth Ohio

A trio of incumbent Democratic senators representing states Donald Trump captured in the 2016 presidential election, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Sherrod Brown of OH and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, will finally have a Republican opponent after Tuesday.

Many are convinced that a Blankenship win, coming just months after the disastrous Alabama Senate race, would destroy the party's prospects of defeating Democratic Sen.

Jenkins, a former Democrat, has repeatedly argued that Manchin missed a big chance to align himself with Trump on taxes and health care.

The exorbitantly wealthy white-collar criminal - who is trying to steal a nomination from career GOP politicians on the strength of his media exposure and the virulence of his racism - also observed, "As some have said, I am Trumpier than Trump, and this morning proves it'". "The establishment is misinforming him because they do not want me to be in the U.S. Senate and promote the President's agenda". Trump endorsed Moore in that race.

Both the Morrisey and Jenkins campaigns reportedly have internal polling showing Mr. Blankenship with a small lead.

Manchin has been a top GOP target since at least November 2016, when Trump won the state with 68.7 percent of the vote.

The loss cut the GOP's Senate majority to 51-49.

In the three-way West Virginia primary, some Republicans are concerned that a victory by Blankenship would mean a winnable seat becomes almost impossible to defend, repeating the results in Alabama.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California said during an appearance on Fox News that Democrats in the Senate have blocked crucial legislation, such as appropriations measures that cleared his chamber, and bolstering Republican ranks there will be key. Blankenship surged into the race after being released from jail less than a year ago. The former CEO of Massey Energy served a year in prison for his involvement in the deadly Upper Big Branch mine explosion.

A weekend poll by one of Blackenship's rivals found him leading with 31 percent of the vote, Jenkins in second with 28 percent and Morrisey with 27 percent, according to the Weekly Standard.

Indeed, Mr. Blankenship's rising poll numbers have coincided with an increasing number of highly inflammatory statements and personal attacks on powerful figures such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. They are "China people", Blankenship said in a recent ad.

McConnell asked the president in a phone call to reject Blankenship, a Republican official familiar with the phone call told The Times.

"No more fumbles like Alabama", he also said in the tweet, while the outside group Mountain Families PAC continued to run a reported $1.3 million worth of TV ads against Blankenship.
