UFC 224: Nunes Criticizes Pennington's Team For Not Stopping The Fight

Amanda Nunes

Nunes, a Salvador, Brazil, native who is now based in Coconut Creek, Fla., fought in her homeland on Saturday night and picked apart Raquel Pennington of Colorado Springs, Colo., in the main event of UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro. A lead leg kick took Pennington's legs right from under her, allowing the Lioness to be the aggressor and back her against the cage.

"I respect this woman so much", the Brazilian said with tears in her eyes after her victory.

If she was admittedly at that point, her corner should have stopped the fight, a view many have taken online and one that Nunes fully believes herself.

The Brazilian won three of her four bouts via knockout, and her reign as the UFC women's bantamweight champion is now the second longest, only behind Rousey who was champion for just under three years in the UFC.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - MAY 12: Amanda Nunes ( L) of Brazil celebrates victory over Raquel Pennington of the United States in their women's bantamweight bout during the UFC 224 event at Jeunesse Arena on May 12, 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In this picture, Amanda Nunes of Brazil poses on the scale during the UFC weigh-in at the Park Theater on July 7, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"It's sad", Nunes told reporters, including MMAjunkie, through an interpreter at the UFC 224 post-fight news conference.

Safety comes first. While a fighter will always give whatever they have left in the tank to go out and not only win a fight, but capture a championship in hostile territory, it's wise to wave off the fight and pull your fighter out of the Octagon when they admit they are done and can't go on any further.

Three People Critical As KZN Mosque Targeted
There are usually few people at the mosque at this time. "This kind of attack on three innocent people is totally unjustified". Two other people were injured. "The motive of the attack on the three men is unknown at this stage", Capt.

"She was physically in the fight in round five but she wasn't mentally in the fight", a UFC commentator said.

Nunes threw her hands up in celebration as she earned the TKO stoppage at 2:36 into the fifth and final round. Kutz received wide spread criticism from fans and fellow fighters for his actions.

"No, no, no, girl", Kutz said. "Don't go out like this". Let's power through this.

"Change your mindset, just throw everything you've got". "Throw everything we got".

Many have voiced their outrage at how her coaches dealt with the situation and the fact that she met her end just moments later just made things that bit more unpleasant.

To her credit Pennington came out on the attack but Nunes took her down and sensing an opportunity to end the fight, Nunes unleashed a barrage of ground-and-pound strikes that busted open Pennington's nose, which left the canvas as well as Pennington' s face to be bloodied.

"It's sad. (My girlfriend) Nina (Ansaroff) told me".
