UN Security Council Criticizes Israel Over Violent Response to Gaza Protests

Protests began after the USA embassy was officially opened in Jerusalem on Monday (local time).

The Gaza health ministry, which provided the toll from Monday's violence, said a nine-month-old girl died from tear gas exposure, but medical officials later cast doubt on that claim, saying the infant had a pre-existing medical condition.

He said he had visited Gaza and seen the atrocities first-hand and quoted his grandfather: "Our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinian people".

A number of countries expressed concern at the violence and some, including Germany and Britain, called for an independent probe.

Alistair Burt, UK Minister for the Middle East, has said the U.S. needs to show greater understanding of the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in a rare criticism of Britain's closest ally.

"For people who do not understand the difference between demonstrations against the government in a sovereign state, and demonstrations that basically are attempts of a terror organization to destroy a military barrier, what can we do?" he asked.

"They can't do anything".

"The government of Saudi Arabia has already warned of the grave consequences of such an unjustified move as a provocation to the feelings of Muslims around the world", the Cabinet added. All that we can do is demonstrate.

The Cabinet also stressed the Kingdom's hope that the worldwide community will adopt a firm and unified stance toward Iran and its hostile actions to destabilize the region and its support for terrorist groups, especially Hezbollah and Houthi militia as well as its support for Assad's regime which has committed the most heinous crimes against its own people.

The protest kicked off with a rally near Grant Park, on Michigan Avenue near Congress, with participants chanting "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!" and "Hey Netanyahu, what do you say?"

Israel has a responsibility to calibrate its use of force, to not use lethal forces, except as a last resort under imminent threat of death or serious injury, he said.

"I support the Embassy moving to Jerusalem, and I think one death is too many on any side", said Suzy Sholin, who supports Israel.

The talks opened at United Nations headquarters in NY with a moment of silence for the 60 Palestinians killed.

During the debate in the British parliament, many lawmakers condemned Israel's use of live fire against protesters.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley defended Israel, however.

In fact the records of several countries here today suggest they would be much less restrained.

He said US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be held accountable. He also accused the Islamist movement Hamas of taking "the people of Gaza hostage".

The resolution said the moving of American Embassy was a violation of worldwide law and the United Nations Charter, which has sparked a popular uprising.

After talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Erdogan warned that history "will not forgive" Israel or the United States for moving the American embassy to Jerusalem in defiance of outrage in the Islamic world.

In December 2017, eight other countries voted against a United Nations resolution telling America to not recognise Jerusalem as the country's capital.

Israel occupied the West Bank and east Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the global community.

The Palestinians seek Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem as a capital.
