Uprooted… Macron's oak tree for Trump vanishes

Angela Merkel's visit to Washington tests Germany's maturity

US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron plant a tree warched by Trump's wfe Melania and Macron's wife Brigitte on the grounds of the White House April 23, 2018 in Washington, DC.

A pale patch of grass now covers the spot.

News photographers snapped away Monday when Trump and Macron shoveled dirt onto the tree during a ceremonial planting on the South Lawn.

The oak had originally sprouted at the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood in northern France, where around 2,000 USA troops died fighting the German Spring Offensive.

The two presidents plant the tree together.

On Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the agreement on limiting Iran's development of nuclear weapons was reached under false pretences because the country's nuclear programme was more advanced than it indicated at the time.

Tiger's Putter Lets Him Down On Thursday
On paper, Thursday's even-par 71 looks right in line with everything he's done through six previous starts this season. Throughout the Florida swing, Woods made up for a lack of control off the tee with his short game.

Now the oak sapling is gone - at least temporarily.

"This oak tree (my gift to [Donald Trump]) will be a reminder at the White House of these ties that bind us".

President Emmanuel Macron tweeted about the significance of his gift as he and President Trump "planted" the tree.

"Over 9,000 American marines died in the Belleau Wood battle in June 1918 and the forest is a memorial site and important symbol of the sacrifice the United States made to ensure peace and stability in Europe", the White House said.

Tree planting ceremonies have long become a staple of state visits, with USA presidents, whether they are hosting foreign leaders or being hosted by them.

The Huffington Post reported that it could also have been taken for safe keeping, as oak trees grow best when they are planted in the autumn, so they can grow roots deep enough throughout the year ready to survive the heat of summer.
