Ariya Jutanugarn leading U.S. Women's Open golf championship by four strokes

Sarah Jane Smith comes out of nowhere to take big lead at U.S. Women's Open AP

The Kingdom's most successful golfer squandered a seven-shot lead with nine holes remaining before edging out South Korea's Kim Hyo-joo on the fourth playoff hole to become the first Thai to claim the richest prize in women's golf.

South Korean-born Su-Hyun Oh, who moved to Australia at 8, shot a 68 and is third.

"I told myself to just go out and have fun and be really committed, and I did", Ariya said. Somehow, she kept her cool.

"After that, I kind of played a little bit scared", she said. "I don't know why".

"I feel like I have these situations a lot in my life", Jutanugarn said.

Ariya Jutanugarn already had a major championship success when she stepped onto the 10th tee at the US Women's Open on Sunday seven strokes ahead of the field.

The Thai had been leading by seven strokes with nine holes left but instead of marching to victory she stumbled into a tension-packed playoff. This was her second victory in her last three starts.

She came to Shoal Creek with eight LPGA titles, including a major championship, the Ricoh Women's British Open two years ago.

She righted the ship in the playoff, which went to a sudden-death format after the two-hole aggregate start failed to produce a victor.

Lava flows cut off access to more Hawaii neighborhoods
The lava flow destroyed a freshwater lake, boiling all the water in it late Saturday, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported . For those whose homes have been unscathed, the prolonged strain of uncertainty has grown increasingly hard .

Ariya then made two superb up-and-down pars from bunkers, firstly to halve the third extra hole before winning at the next. After almost four hours, play resumed, though just for an hour before the LPGA announced the round was suspended due to inclement weather and would resume at 6:45 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Ariya Jutanugarn smiles before she plays her shots, a reminder to stay in the moment, commit to the process and not worry about the outcome.

Duane Smith is the only caddie Sarah Jane has known and he has been at her side every step of the way, on and off the course, since she turned pro in 2004.

But things were about to get rough in a hurry. She missed several good chances to pick up shots, which appeared to take the wind from her sails, before surrendering the lead with consecutive bogeys at the eighth and ninth holes.

Ariya had birdied her first hole and was six-under for the tournament through eight holes when the horn sounded to end play for the day.

The pair will go head to head in the final group again on Sunday.

PGA - Bryson DeChambeau finally got it right on his third try at the 18th hole and won the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, in a playoff.

DeChambeau three-putted for bogey on the 18th for a 1-under 71 to get into a three-way playoff at Muirfield Village. I felt like it was good change at the time, but turns out it wasn't. She made six birdies and just one bogey, rarely encountering serious trouble.

Smith works with coach Sean Foley formerly of Tiger Woods fame and Smith is aware of the impact he has as a technical coach and motivator. Starting five shots behind, Woods pulled within three shots with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 fifth hole.
